Album caption: El Capitan, and the valley bottom. The 3,000-foot cliff is the highest in Yosemite Valley and one of the highest in the world. The salient is composed throughout of unfractured, massive granite. The gray blotches on the wall at the right are due to masses of diorite that invaded the granite. Yosemite National Park, California. Pothole Dome, a large roche moutonne on the west side of Tuolumne Meadows, was shaped by glacial smoothing and plucking. The ice moved from right (stoss side) to left (leeside). The fluted surface was shaped by subglacial water scour. Figure 70, U.S. Geological Survey Bulletin 1595.
