This workshop is part of a broader research project aimed at better understanding how communities can engage in the process of wind energy development. The research is funded through a National Science Foundation grant (#SES 0724672) to Roopali Phadke at Macalester College. This report was prepared by a research team from Macalester College. Throughout the day of the workshop, the research team collected demographic data about participants, gauged their familiarity with wind energy, and elicited their perceptions about landscape impacts. This was done through the use of interactive keypad polling, photographic analysis within focus groups, open-ended writing exercises and a final evaluation. The data were brought...

Project Synopsis: the Ferris Mountain project area consists of mainly timbered slopes, interspersed with upland areas dominated by sagebrush, grass, and mountain shrub communities. Timber stands within the project unit consist of Douglas fir, subalpine fir, spruce, lodgepole pine, limber pine, and aspen, in addition to scattered locations of Rocky Mountain juniper. Long-term suppression of wildfires has promoted the encroachment of conifers into shrublands, aspen stands, and drainages supporting aspen, waterbirch and willows, to the point where many of these communities are non-functional. Decadence and disease is commonly observed in terms of mistletoe, blister rust, and bleeding rust, and pine beetles have...
Implementation of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) and Wetlands Reserve Program (WRP) has resulted in the restoration of >2 million ha of wetland and grassland habitats in the Prairie Pothole Region (PPR). Restoration of habitats through these programs provides diverse ecosystem services to society, but few investigators have evaluated the environmental benefits achieved by these programs. We describe changes in wetland processes, functions, and ecosystem services that occur when wetlands and adjacent uplands on agricultural lands are restored through Farm Bill conservation programs. At the scale of wetland catchments, projects have had positive impacts on water storage,...

GPChickenHistoricRange is an ESRI SDE Feature Class showing Colorado greater prairie chicken distribution. Maps are derived from records of lekking sites for greater prairie chickens. Leks may be classified as active, inactive or lek of unknown status. Classification is usually based on knowledge of population fluctuations and/or male attendance; leks are considered to identify important seasonal activity areas nearby. GPChickenHistoricRange is an ESRI shapefile showing areas where greater prairie chickens have been known to occur prior to 1955 (taken from Aldrich and Duvall, 1955). This information was derived from field personnel. A variety of data capture techniques were used including drawing on mylar overlays...

There are three main components to the ESI: shoreline habitats, sensitive biological resources, and human-use resources. The shoreline and intertidal areas are ranked based on sensitivity determined by: (1) Shoreline type (substrate, grain size, tidal elevation, origin); (2) Exposure to wave and tidal energy; (3) Biological productivity and sensitivity; and (4) Ease of cleanup. The biology layers focus on threatened/endangered species, areas of high concentration and areas where sensitive life stages may occur. Supporting data tables provide species/location-specific abundance, seasonality, status, life history, and source information Human use resources mapped include managed areas (parks, refuges, critical habitats,...

In a step towards implementing our Vision, SREP completed a statewide assessment of wildlife linkages in collaboration with the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT), the Federal Highway Administration, The Nature Conservancy, and Colorado State University, identifying and prioritizing wildlife linkages across the state of Colorado. The goal of this work is to provide transportation planners, state and federal agencies, community leaders, engineers, and conservationists with a statewide vision for reconnecting habitats that are vital for maintaining healthy populations of native species. Both the Federal Highway Administration and CDOT have begun promoting wildlife crossings in their transportation plans...
The deserts of the Southwest are under increasing pressure from growing human populations for land development - for cities, agriculture, livestock grazing, transportation and utility corridors, power plants, military activities, mining, and recreation. While some anthropogenic activities were initiated in the mid-1800s and have continued to present day, others are relatively new. The cumulative effects of historic and recent anthropogenic activities on natural resources have been both local and regional in scope. In addition, natural processes, such as local weather and global climate change, exert important influences on the landscape.

This theme is polygon data that depicts two types of development for the state of Wyoming. The first is existing development and the second are habitats where there is a high likelihood that development will occur in the near future. We considered development of oil, gas and coal bed methane, mining of minerals (trona, uranimum, coal, and bentonite), urban expansion. Other infrastructure activities such as roads, highways, fiberoptic lines, processing plants, pipelines, other facilities, and various combinations of development that were believed to impact sage-grouse were recorded. Information sources and assessment processes varied depending on data available and resource specialist participation for areas within...
