These data were released prior to the October 1, 2016 effective date for the USGS’s policy dictating the review, approval, and release of scientific data as referenced in USGS Survey Manual Chapter 502.8 Fundamental Science Practices: Review and Approval of Scientific Data for Release. The digital data set provides locations and general descriptions of sites instrumented to collect micrometeorological data from which mean annual ET rates were computed. Sites are located in Ash Meadows and Oasis Valley, Nevada. Data were collected December 1993 through present.

Land managers in the Great Basin are working to maintain or restore sagebrush ecosystems as climate change exacerbates existing threats. This dataset contains 4222 point locations corresponding to 136 weather station locations in or bordering Wyoming. Each of the 136 weather stations includes 31 points, with the same latitude longitude, for different years (1970-2000). Each point contains attributes for total precipitation in inches for each month, as well as an annual precipitation for the year. The data were obtained from the Western Regional Climatic data website.

![]() This representativity index is based on how many stations exist within a grid of 50 km by 50 km. This number is adjusted by landscape variability, and variability is defined by the number of unique elevation values within a 50 by 50 km window. A 50 km by 50 km window with only one elevation value (very flat), can be well represented by one station; however a complex landscape like the sierra might need more stations to be better represented. In this raster layer, the higher values represent more uncertainty; lower values represent less uncertainty.

The dataset includes a table in comma delimited format of daily evapotranspiration (ET) from 6/14/2018 to 12/31/2020 from an ET station within the Blue Cypress Marsh Conservation Area, within Indian River County, Florida. Evapotranspiration was estimated using eddy-covariance methods and missing records were gap-filled with a version of the Turc equation (Trajkovic and Kolakovic, 2009) that was regressed against observed values of eddy-covariance ET. The Turc equation performed exceptionally well (r-squared value of 0.94) for reproducing observed daily ET rates. ![]() Historical cooperative station index. Cooperative stations are U.S. stations operated by local observers which generally report max/min temperatures and precipitation. National Weather Service (NWS) data are also included in this dataset. The data receive extensive automated + manual quality control. The index includes a county location cross-reference. Over 8000 stations are currently active across the country.
Two populations of boreal toads (Bufo boreas) experienced drastic declines in abundance in the late 1990s. Evidence supported the hypothesis of disease (the chytrid fungus, Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis) as the cause of these declines, but other hypotheses had not been evaluated. We used an 11-year capture-recapture data set to evaluate weather and disease as causes of these declines. We developed sets of mathematical models that reflected hypothesized relationships between several weather variables and annual survival rates of adult males in these populations. In the sagebrush/bunchgrass steppe of the North American Great Basin soil water potential has been shown to exhibit diel fluctuations with water potential increasing during the night as a result of water loss from roots in relatively dry soil layers. We hypothesized that environmental conditions promoting low transpiration rates (shading, cloudiness) would cause a net increase in soil water potential as a result of reduced soil water depletion during the day and continuing water efflux from roots during the night.
