The circumboreal vegetation mapping (CBVM) project is an international collaboration among vegetation scientists to create a new vegetation map of the boreal region at a 1:7.5 million scale with a common legend and mapping protocol (Talbot and Meades 2011). The map is intended to portray potential natural vegetation, or the vegetation that would exist in the absence of human or natural disturbance, rather than existing vegetation that is commonly generated at larger scales. This report and map contributes to the CBVM effort by developing maps of bioclimatic zones, geographic sectors with similar floristic variability, and vegetation in boreal Alaska, Yukon, northwestern British Columbia, and a mountainous portion...

Vegetative cover surveys for the Nebraska collected for the purpose of developing a land cover map. These data were collected by Nebraska Game and Parks Commission in coordination with the Missouri Resource Assessment Partnership (MoRAP). The overall vegetation community was recorded in addition to the dominant 3 species and percent cover of these vegetative communities: herbaceous, shrub, and woody. A photo was taken of each survey location and attached to the record.
To assess the vulnerability of a region to invasive plants, documentation of the presence or absence of invasive plants is necessary. This project expands on work initiated by the EPA to identify invasive plants in rural communities in the Bristol Bay region. Eighteen additional Bristol Bay communities were inventoried for invasive plants in 2012-2014. This work provides a baseline for understanding the potential impact from these plants and the opportunity to treat the existing populations before they invade new areas.

This project used existing ShoreZone coastal imagery to map 719 km of shoreline in Bristol Bay, from Cape Constantine to Cape Newenham. This section of coastline is an extremely important herring spawning area and an important component of the Bristol Bay fisheries. Intertidal and nearshore vegetation, on which herring spawn, was catalogued as part of the mapping and, along with shore types, coastal substrate, and coastal biota, added to the state-wide ShoreZone dataset.

The Circumboreal Vegetation Mapping (CBVM) group is a group of vegetation scientists within the Arctic Council’s CAFF Program devoted to mapping the vegetation of the entire circumboreal region. The aim of the CBVM project is to produce a vegetation map with geobotanical database and derived products for the entire boreal biome using a unified, international method for classifying and mapping boreal vegetation. In the proposed workshop we will focus on the Northwest Boreal LCC to unite it hierarchically with a vegetation map covering boreal North America and Eurasia. Our map of the Alaska boreal is currently being prepared for completion in December 2013. We will develop a process to integrate the Canadian portion...

Map showing the area proposed for ShoreZone mapping (in red) with FY13 funds from the Western Alaska Landscape Conservation Cooperative funds; the coastline with existing ShoreZone imagery and mapped data in blue; and the coastline with existing ShoreZone imagery that remains to be mapped in green. This imagery was collected in either 2006 (Bristol Bay survey July 19-23, 2006) or 2011 (Southwest Alaska/Alaska Peninsula May 16-21, 2011).This project provided systematic coastal habitat imagery and mapping for the Alaska Peninsula shoreline following the Alaska ShoreZone Mapping Protocol and made these products web-accessible. The completed mapping product is available on the ShoreZone website in a searchable dataset....
To assess the vulnerability of a region to invasive plants, documentation of the presence or absence of invasive plants is necessary. This project identified invasive plants in rural communities in the Bristol Bay region. Villages were inventoried for invasive plant species; providing essential baseline to understand the potential impact from these plants and the opportunity to treat the existing populations before they invade new areas. The second part of the project used these data to assess the vulnerability of important subsistence plants to changes in pollination, as key insect species can be drawn to invasive plant populations.

This project provided systematic coastal habitat imagery and mapping for the Alaska Peninsula shoreline following the Alaska ShoreZone Mapping Protocol and made these products web-accessible. The completed mapping product is available on the ShoreZone website in a searchable dataset. Individuals and communities can query coastal habitat information for use in coastal zone planning. Mapped features include features such as shore types and morphology (e.g., dunes, beaches, and estuaries), intertidal biota (e.g., salt marshes, eelgrass beds, kelp beds) and man-made features (e.g., seawalls, docks). In addition to the dataset, the web-accessible, high resolution low-tide imagery (video and photos) complement the mapped...
