The Bureau of the Census Urbanized Area Boundaries data set contains boundary information for urban areas with a population greater than 50,000. The data set includes boundaries for urban areas in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico. A UA may contain both place and nonplace territory. The U.S. Census Bureau delineates UAs to provide a better separation of urban and rural territory, population, and housing in the vicinity of large places. At least 35,000 people in a UA must live in an area that is not part of a military reservation.
Zone 3 (covering parts of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida) of the contiguous U.S. percent developed imperviousness dataset from NLCD 2006, released 2/16/2011. The full dataset is divided into 25 zones, which can all be found in the NLCD 2006 gallery. The National Land Cover Database products are created through a cooperative project conducted by the Multi-Resolution Land Characteristics (MRLC) Consortium. The MRLC Consortium is a partnership of federal agencies (www.mrlc.gov), consisting of the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), the U.S. Forest Service...

These data were collected as part of a study to assess the stormwater volume reduction capabilities of urban street trees. In this paired-catchment study rainfall-runoff relations were developed in a medium-density residential area before and after half of the street trees were removed from the treatment basin. The Supplementary_Event_Data set contains rainfall depth and intensity, event date and duration, and paired runoff volume and peak discharge for 135 rainfall events that ocurred between May and September 2018-2020. Unit value discharge and rainfall data used to develop the Supplementary_Event_Data are also published in this data release.

This is a map of populated areas with population density greater than or equal to 1 individual/ha (i.e., rural/exurban but including suburban and urban as defined by Marzluff et al. 2001) as determined from U.S. Census data corrected for public lands.

This dataset presents observations and measurements of riparian plant invasion, community composition, and environmental conditions at 238 bridge crossings in four western USA river basins: the Colorado Headwaters, upper/middle Rio Grande, upper Arkansas River, and South Platte River (281,946 square kilometers). The 238 sites are a stratified random sample of all bridge crossings in the river basins, with roughly equal numbers of sites in landscapes dominated by (1) urban and residential (developed) land-use, (2) agricultural (cultivated) land-use, and (3) undeveloped land cover. The dataset includes field observations of stem counts for three non-native riparian woody plant taxa (Tamarix ramosissima x T. chinensis...

This file contains the history of the current urban growth boundary for the Portland Metro region. Areas that were added to the UGB are attributed with the year they were added. The data only contains additions for the current UGB; areas that were added to the UGB, and then subsequently removed, are not part of this data. Downloaded from Metro's RLIS Discovery site 7/2/2012.
The impact of human activities on biogeochemical cycles in terrestrial environments is nowhere more apparent than in urban landscapes. Trace metals, collected on roadways and transported by storm water, may contaminate soils and sediments associated with storm water management systems. These systems will accumulate metals and associated sediments may reach toxic levels for terrestrial and aquatic organisms using the retention basins as habitat. The fate and bioavailability of these metals once deposited is poorly understood. Here we present results from a dose-response experiment that examines the application of synchrotron X-ray fluorescence methods (μ-SXRF) to test the hypothesis that earthworms will bio-accumulate...

Synopsis: This study examines the influence of landscape fragmentation on trophic cascades in southern California. Results indicate that, as habitat fragmentation negatively affects the persistence of coyote populations, the abundance of smaller meso-predators increase, resulting in higher mortality rates in scrub-breeding birds. Fragment size was a strong indicator of coyote abundance, and coyote abundance was a strong indicator of bird diversity, as coyotes kept down the number of meso-predators that prey on birds. The positive effect of fragment area and the negative effect of fragment age were the strongest determinants of bird diversity in this system. Conclusions: Fragment size correlates with coyote abundance,...

The EPiC / Urban Conservation Core Team is a small group of volunteers that provides leadership and direction for the EPiC / Urban Conservation Technical Advisory Group. Through a leadership role within the EPiC / Urban TAG, the Core Team helps initiate and guide dialogue in the larger community about developing common planning, actions, and evaluation for landscape scale urban conservation in the Midwest. The Urban Core Team Strategic Planning Workshop was an organizational meeting held to: 1. Discuss Green Infrastructure as an organizational framework for EPIC and receive feedback on EPIC. 2. Walk through the EPiC framework 3. Determine next steps on Core Team establishing mission, visions, goals/objectives.
Biological, chemical, physical habitat, riparian, and land-use data collected from the Midwest streams by the National Water Quality Project Regional Stream Quality Team. Data were used to develop structural equation models for the purpose of understanding how networks of potential stressors influence stream ecological health. For more information about the Midwest Regional Stream Quality Assessment please go to https://doi.org/10.3133/fs20123124.
