The Assessment Unit is the fundamental unit used in the National Assessment Project for the assessment of undiscovered oil and gas resources. The Assessment Unit is defined within the context of the higher-level Total Petroleum System. The Assessment Unit is shown here as a geographic boundary interpreted, defined, and mapped by the geologist responsible for the province and incorporates a set of known or postulated oil and (or) gas accumulations sharing similar geologic, geographic, and temporal properties within the Total Petroleum System, such as source rock, timing, migration pathways, trapping mechanism, and hydrocarbon type. The Assessment Unit boundary is defined geologically as the limits of the geologic...

The USGS Central Region Energy Team assesses oil and gas resources of the United States. The onshore and State water areas of the United States comprise 71 provinces. Within these provinces, Total Petroleum Systems are defined and Assessment Units are defined and assessed. Each of these provinces is defined geologically, and most province boundaries are defined by major geologic changes. The Uinta-Piceance Province is located in eastern Utah and western Colorado, encompassing all or parts of Delta, Garfield, Gunnison, Mesa, Moffat, Montrose, Ouray, Rio Blanco, and Routt Counties in Colorado and all or parts of Carbon, Duchesne, Emery, Grand, Sanpete, Sevier, Uintah, Utah, and Wasatch Counties in Utah. Tar sands represent a significant source of hydrocarbons in the United States. Also known by several other names including bitumen-bearing rocks, natural asphalt, tarry oil, bituminous rock, oil sands and rock asphalt, these rocks are mostly located on the margins of sedimentary basins. Maps of tar sands and deposits were digitized to illustrate their distribution and extent within the Total Petroleum System.

Cell maps for each oil and gas assessment unit were created by the USGS as a method for illustrating the degree of exploration, type of production, and distribution of production in an assessment unit or province. Each cell represents a quarter-mile square of the land surface, and the cells are coded to represent whether the wells included within the cell are predominantly oil-producing, gas-producing, both oil and gas-producing, dry, or the type of production of the wells located within the cell is unknown. The well information was initially retrieved from the IHS Energy Group, PI/Dwights PLUS Well Data on CD-ROM, which is a proprietary, commercial database containing information for most oil and gas wells in the...

The maturation contours show vitrinite reflectance trends and ranges for five key petroleum system horizons within the Uinta-Piceance Province. The horizons are the lower part of the Green River Formation, the base of the Mesaverde Group/top of Mancos Shale, the base of the Mancos Shale, the base of the Phosphoria Formation, and coal within the Ferron Sandstone Member of the Mancos Shale. The ranges of vitrinite reflectance shown for the horizons other than the Phosphoria Formation and the Ferron Sandstone are <0.6, 0.6 - 0.75, 0.75 - 1.1, 1.1 - 1.35, and >1.35. The ranges for the Phosphoria Formation are <1.35, 1.35 - 2.0, 2.0 - 4.0, and >4.0; the ranges for the Ferron Sandstone Member are <0.45, 0.45 - 0.5, 0.5...

This report is one in a series of digital maps, data files, and reports generated by the US Geological Survey (USGS) to provide geologic information for the Interior Columbia Basin Ecosystem Management Project (ICBEMP), a US Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management interagency project. The various digital maps and data files that were provided by teh USGS and that are available in this and other reports are being used in a geographic information system (GIS)-based ecosystem assessment. The assessment will include a comprehensive analysis of past, present, and future ecosystem conditions within the general area of the Columbia River Basin east of the Cascade Mountains.
