Cell maps for each oil and gas assessment unit were created by the USGS to illustrate the degree of exploration, type of production, and distribution of production in an assessment unit or province. Each cell represents a quarter-mile square of the land surface, and the cells are coded to represent whether the wells included within the cell are predominantly oil-producing, gas-producing, both oil and gas-producing, dry, or the type of production of the wells located within the cell is unknown. The well information was initially retrieved from the IHS Energy Group, PI/Dwights PLUS Well Data on CD-ROM, which is a proprietary, commercial database containing information for most oil and gas wells in the U.S. Cells were...

The surficial geologic map of the Eastern and Central United Statesdepicts the areal distribution of surficial geologic deposits and othermaterials that accumulated or formed during the past 2+ million years, the period that includes all activities of the human species. Thesematerials are at the surface of the earth. They make up the "ground"on which we walk, the "dirt" in which we dig foundations, and the soilin which we grow crops. Most of our human activity is related in oneway or another to these surface materials that are referred tocollectively by many geologists as regolith, the mantle of fragmentaland generally unconsolidated material that overlies the bedrockfoundation of the continent. The map is based...

This digital map database consists of the ESRI ARC/INFO Version 7.0.2 coverages used to generate the plates in Professional Paper 1538-M (1994). Base-data is from 1:2,000,000-scale Digital Line Graph (DLG) data (roads, railroads, streams, water bodies, and international boundaries) and 1:100,000 scale DLG data (state and county boundaries).

The coverages were created using the gridded data available fromthis ftp site. Most of the gridded data for the United States is ata spacing of 0.1 degrees latitude and longitude. The higherresolution data available for California, Nevada, and part ofArizona and Utah were used for both the U.S. and Western U.S. maps. The gridded data for this area is at a spacing of 0.05 degreeslatitude and longitude.

The Assessment Unit is the fundamental unit used in the National Assessment Project for the assessment of undiscovered oil and gas resources. The Assessment Unit is defined within the context of the higher-level Total Petroleum System. The Assessment Unit is shown here as a geographic boundary interpreted, defined, and mapped by the geologist responsible for the province and incorporates a set of known or postulated oil and (or) gas accumulations sharing similar geologic, geographic, and temporal properties within the Total Petroleum System, such as source rock, timing, migration pathways, trapping mechanism, and hydrocarbon type. The Assessment Unit boundary is defined geologically as the limits of the geologic...

This CD presents maps derived from a subset of the National Uranium Resource Evaluation(NURE) Hydrogeochemical and Stream Sediment Reconnaissance (HSSR) data.Approxiamately 260,000 samples were analyzed in the continental U.S. and consisted ofsolid samples, including stream, lake, pond, spring, and playa sediments, and soils.Data for eleven elements were analyzed and included on this release of the NationalGeochemical Atlas CD: Na, Ti, Fe, Cu, Zn, As, Ce, Hf, Pb, Th, and U.The National Uranium Resource Evaluation (NURE) program of the Department of Energy (DOE) collecteda vast amount of chemical data on sediment, soil, and water samples from the United States in thelate 1970's and early 1980's. This element of the...

The USGS Central Region Energy Team assesses oil and gas resources of the United States. The onshore and State water areas of the United States comprise 71 provinces. Within these provinces, Total Petroleum Systems are defined and Assessment Units are defined and assessed. Each of these provinces is defined geologically, and most province boundaries are defined by major geologic changes. The Michigan Basin Province is located in all of Michigan, except for a small portion of the Upper Penninsula, eastern Wisconsin, northeastern Illinois, northern Indiana, and northwestern Ohio. The main population centers within the study area are Detroit, Grand Rapids, Lansing and Flint, Michigan; Milwakee, Wisconsin; Chicago,...

This file contains data for selected significant, buried Quaternary sediments, which is one layer of information on this CD-ROM, USGS Digital Data Series #38 (Soller and Packard, 1998). Together, all layers (10 of them) compose the digital version of a 1:1,000,000- scale map of Quaternary deposits (including both glacial and Holocene sediments) compiled for the glaciated area of the United States east of the Rocky Mountains (that is, the area covered by the Laurentide ice sheets). Parts of southern Ontario, areas beneath the Great Lakes, and parts of the submerged eastern seaboard are also included on the map. The paper version of the map is Soller (1993a, b, 1994, 1998, and in press). The map is a regional synthesis...

This CD-ROM contains a digital version of the Geologic Map of theUnited States, originally published at a scale of 1:2,500,000 (Kingand Beikman, 1974b). It excludes Alaska and Hawaii. In addition tothe graphical formats, the map key is included in ASCII text.A geographic information system (GIS) allows combining andoverlaying of layers for analysis of spatial relations not readilyapparent in the standard paper publication. This disc contains onlygeology. However, digital data on geology, geophysics, andgeochemistry can be combined to create useful derivative products--for example, see Phillips and others (1993).This CD-ROM contains a copy of the text and figures fromProfessional Paper 901 by King and Beikman (1974a)....

Debris flows, debris avalanches, mud flows and lahars arefast-moving landslides that occur in a wide variety of environmentsthroughout the world. They are particularly dangerous to life andproperty because they move quickly, destroy objects in their paths, and can strike with little warning. The purpose of this map is toshow where debris flows have occurred in the conterminous UnitedStates and where these slope movements might be expected in thefuture.
