This feature class was created to assemble oil and gas well information for a comprehensive inventory of energy data pertinent to the Wyoming Landscape Conservation Initiative decision-making process. These data are available as online resources for scientists, resource managers engaged in the Initiative, and other researchers. The GIS data and map services created for this study are available for interactive analysis and/or download at the Energy Geoscience Center WLCI website.

A vegetation classification was derived from a supervised classification of EOSAT Landsat Thematic Mapper (25 meter data from a scene recorded on June 30, 1994) for the Moxa Arch area of southwestern Wyoming. USGS 7.5 minute quadrangles covered by the vegetation map include: Church Butte, Church Butte NW, Cow Hollow Creek, Fontenelle, Fontenelle SE, Granger, McCullen Bluff, Moxa, Sevenmile Gulch, Shute Creek Lake,Verne, and Whisky Buttes. Spectral band ratioing of the Landsat Thematic Mapper was used to distinguish between the various vegetation types. The maturation contours show vitrinite reflectance trends and ranges for petroleum system horizons within the Southwestern Wyoming Province. The horizons are the base of the Niobrara Formation, the top of the Frontier Formation, the base of the Mesaverde Formation, the top of the Mesaverde Formation/base of the Lewis Formation, and the top of the Lewis Formation. The ranges of vitrinite reflectance shown for the Niobrara horizons are 0.6, 0.8-1.3, and 1.3. The Wyoming statewide time-stamped oil and gas wells shapefile was developed to provide a historical perspective of drilling activity for the Wyoming Landscape Conservation Initiative (WLCI). This product approximates start and stop dates for each well in Wyoming based on database attributes. These data originated from the Wyoming Oil and Gas Conservation Commission (WOGCC). Data represent 120 years of oil and gas drilling (1900 to 2020) and will facilitate a landscape-level approach to integrated science-based assessments, resource management, and land-use decision making.
