This feature class was created to assemble oil and gas well information for a comprehensive inventory of energy data pertinent to the Wyoming Landscape Conservation Initiative decision-making process. These data are available as online resources for scientists, resource managers engaged in the Initiative, and other researchers. The GIS data and map services created for this study are available for interactive analysis and/or download at the Energy Geoscience Center WLCI website.

This data represents grazing allotment boundaries managed by the BLM. Allotments are permitted use areas for public grazing of cattle, sheep and horses. Allotments can be a mixture of different surface ownerships, for example a BLM allotment can encompass privately owned land or state land Allotments can also be leased to various types of livestock, cattle, sheep and/or horses.
The USGS Central Region Energy Team assesses oil and gas resources of the United States. The onshore and State water areas of the United States comprise 71 provinces. Within these provinces, Total Petroleum Systems are defined and Assessment Units are defined and assessed. Each of these provinces is defined geologically, and most province boundaries are defined by major geologic changes. The Southwestern Wyoming Province is located in northeastern Utah, northwestern Colorado and southwestern Wyoming, encompassing all or parts of Eagle, Garfield, Moffat, Rio Blanco, and Routt Counties in Colorado and all or parts of Carbon, Fremont, Lincoln, Sweetwater, Sublette, Teton, and Uintah Counties in Wyoming and all or parts...

A vegetation classification was derived from a supervised classification of EOSAT Landsat Thematic Mapper (25 meter data from a scene recorded on June 30, 1994) for the Moxa Arch area of southwestern Wyoming. USGS 7.5 minute quadrangles covered by the vegetation map include: Church Butte, Church Butte NW, Cow Hollow Creek, Fontenelle, Fontenelle SE, Granger, McCullen Bluff, Moxa, Sevenmile Gulch, Shute Creek Lake,Verne, and Whisky Buttes. Spectral band ratioing of the Landsat Thematic Mapper was used to distinguish between the various vegetation types. In all, eleven types were distinguishable: low density sagebrush, high density sagebrush, greasewood/mixed shrub, saltbush/playa, playa/barren, riparian scrub/shrub,...

Identifying ecologically relevant reference sites is important for evaluating ecosystem recovery, but the relevance of references that are temporally static is unclear in the context of vast landscapes with varying disturbance and environmental contexts over space and time. This question is pertinent for landscapes dominated by sagebrush (Artemisia spp.) which face a suite of threats from disturbance and development but also have lengthy recovery times. Here, we applied a dynamic reference approach to studying and projecting recovery of sagebrush on former oil and gas well pads in southwest Wyoming, USA, using over 3 decades of remote sensing data (1985-2018). We also used quantile regression to evaluate factors...
The USGS Central Region Energy Team assesses oil and gas resources of the United States. The onshore and State water areas of the United States comprise 71 provinces. Within these provinces, hydrocarbon plays were defined and assessed. Each of these provinces is defined geologically, and most province boundaries are defined by major geologic changes. The province boundaries were drawn on the county lines that most closely followed the natural geologic boundaries.

The Assessment Unit is the fundamental unit used in the National Assessment Project for the assessment of undiscovered oil and gas resources. The Assessment Unit is defined within the context of the higher-level Total Petroleum System. The Assessment Unit is shown here as a geographic boundary interpreted, defined, and mapped by the geologist responsible for the province and incorporates a set of known or postulated oil and (or) gas accumulations sharing similar geologic, geographic, and temporal properties within the Total Petroleum System, such as source rock, timing, migration pathways, trapping mechanism, and hydrocarbon type. The Assessment Unit boundary is defined geologically as the limits of the geologic...

Cell maps for each oil and gas assessment unit were created by the USGS as a method for illustrating the degree of exploration, type of production, and distribution of production in an assessment unit or province. Each cell represents a quarter-mile square of the land surface, and the cells are coded to represent whether the wells included within the cell are predominantly oil-producing, gas-producing, both oil and gas-producing, dry, or the type of production of the wells located within the cell is unknown. The well information was initially retrieved from the IHS Energy Group, PI/Dwights PLUS Well Data on CD-ROM, which is a proprietary, commercial database containing information for most oil and gas wells in the...

Information details withdrawals in and around the Pinedale Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Field Office. Withdrawal (defined in CFR 43 Chapter II (10/01/01 Edition) 2300.0-5 page 78. Withdrawal means withholding an area of Federal land from settlement, sale, location, or entry under some or all of the general land laws, for the purpose of limiting activities under those laws in order to maintain other public values in the area or reserving the area for a particular public purpose or program; or transferring jurisdiction over an area of Federal land, other than property governed by the Federal Property and Administrative Services Act (40 U.S.C. 472), from one department, bureau or agency to another department, bureau...

This data depicts range improvement projects (RIP) on BLM land in the Pinedale Field Office including type of project, located and date constructed or implemented. This data does not address condition of RIP. These projects are constructed with the objective of improving rangelands through the proper distribution of livestock.

Gas field infrastructure elements contributing to land disturbance located in four gas fields (Continental Divide – Creston – Blue Gap (CCB), Jonah, Moxa Arch, and Pinedale Anticline Project Area) in southwestern Wyoming were collected as polygon features in ArcGIS. Classes included four types of roads, well pads (active and abandoned), residual disturbance associated with the well pads, buried utilities, disturbances associated with non-well pad industry facilities, and areas of general disturbance associated with the installation and operation of gas wells not fitting one of the other disturbance class definitions.
