This dataset was created in order to facilitate transboundary conservation work and research projects, by integrating land cover maps into a single dataset from Cape Caution, BC, to Yakutat Bay, AK. It includes three levels of land classification, site index, elevation, hydric soils (yes/no), karst (yes/no), primary and secondary species, size class, and volume class. It also includes a number of other important attributes from individual datasets, which were not crosswalked between the different areas. This file represents Land Classification Level 1, the most general land cover classification in the database.
This cover dataset contains polygons which depict Riparian Management Areas and wind farm buffers (no cut areas) on the Tongass National Forest.
The purpose of this study is to evaluate potential tsunami hazards for the community of Sitka. We numerically modeled the extent of inundation from tsunami waves generated by near- and far-field tectonic sources. We performed numerical modeling of historic events at Sitka, such as the tsunami triggered by the 1964 Great Alaska Earthquake, and the tsunami waves generated by the recent 2011 Tohoku and 2012 Haida Gwaii earthquakes. This data set compiles the major and trace element chemistry of rock samples collected by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) at Bokan Mountain, located in the southern part of Prince of Wales Island, southeastern Alaska. Bokan Mountain was formed by an Early Jurassic peralkaline igneous complex that intruded into lower Paleozoic rocks of the Alexander terrane of southeast Alaska. In the Saint Elias Mountains of southeast Alaska, the presence of weak sedimentary and metamorphic rocks and active uplift resulting from the collision of the Yakutat and North American tectonic plates create landslide-prone conditions (Winkler et al., 2000). This dataset is used for cartographic representation of "double-line" streams where braided watercourses, wide channels and multi-channels occur on stream/river systems. This particular version of the dataset was developed to submit to the National Hydrography Dataset (NHD) As the SEAK Hydro database evolves, so to will the metadata for this dataset. Until noted otherwise, please reference this metadata for an older version of the source data. This dataset provides cartographic representation of "wide" linear water features of the Tongass National Forest in Southeast Alaska with the inclusion of some features from state and private lands.
This dataset is used to denote USFS Land Use Designations (LUD) on the Tongass National Forest. Chapter 3, of Land and Resource Management Plan includes the complete management prescription for the 19 LUDS used in the Forest Plan. The Preliminary Classification of Terrestrial Ecosystems in Southeast Alaska is based on 4 major data layers: USDA Forest Service Existing Vegetation database, the National Wetland Inventory, the USDA Forest Service Landforms and Karst from USFS soils and karst inventories. These layers were merged with auxillary sources from Landsat Enahnced Thematic Mapper (ETM) and supplemented with aspect and elevation from the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission Digital Elevation Model (SRTM DEM) . This master database retains all of the detailed features from each of these datasets to allow maximum flexibility for future researchers to use unique combinations of habitat variables that suit their subject of interest.

Two data sets concerning organic contaminants are included here to aid in assessment of the sea otter population collapse in southwest Alaska. One data set consists of levels of organic pollutant compounds found in wild sea otter blood collected from captured animals in 1997 (Jessup et al., 2010). These sea otters were captured from islands in the western Aleutians and from outside the area of population collapse, in southeast Alaska near Cross Sound.
