This dataset describes the diameter, shape, settling velocity, and specific gravity of eggs from 9 female pallid sturgeon and 14 female shovelnose sturgeon as determined in laboratory studies. Pallid sturgeon and shovelnose sturgeon are believed to broadcast demersal eggs in the current, near the river bed over coarse substrate. It is hypothesized that eggs settle immediately following fertilization, but field conditions preclude direct observation. The dispersal of sturgeon eggs is affected by physical properties of the eggs and hydraulic conditions at the spawning location.

The study was designed to assess the strength of the innate linkage of substrate and food in foraging by early juvenile Pallid and Shovelnose Sturgeon and their hybrids and adult Sicklefin and Shoal Chub. The data include information on the fish weights throughout the duration of the experiment as well as observed fish behavior data. Wet weights from fish were recorded to monitor feeding consumption and the behavior data was generated in response to watching the fish during feeding. Information found in the fish weights data table includes the fish name, the tank number, the food treatment given, the light treatment given, the week of the trial, the date when the weight was taken, the substrate material, where food...

This dataset documents the number of normally developed hatched free embryos, abnormally developed hatched free embryos, and viable unhatched embryos from two laboratory trials (shovelnose sturgeon during April and pallid sturgeon during May 2016) in substrate conditions designed to simulate potential fates within a dynamic riverine environment. Trials were performed with substrate treatments that consisted of clean glass (control), gravel, medium-coarse sand, and fine sand-silt. Medium-coarse sand and fine sand-silt substrates were each tested three ways: unburied, partially buried, and fully buried (1–2 millimeter depth). Pallid sturgeon and shovelnose sturgeon embryos were exposed to trial conditions from the...

The data set contains sampling data, catch data, and biological data associated with a broad-scale experiment to examine free embryo dispersal and larval settlement of endangered pallid sturgeon (Scaphirhynchus albus) in the Missouri River of eastern Montana and western North Dakota. On 20190701, two age groups of pallid sturgeon including 771,707 1-day post-hatch (dph) free embryos and 200,786 5-dph free embryos were released in the Missouri River where dispersal in the water column was assessed through 150 miles. Following dispersal, beam trawl sampling of benthic habitats was conducted to verify settlement and quantify the spatial extent of settlement. Trawling was conducted for nine consecutive weeks from 20190716...

The four primary objectives of this project were to: (1) compile a dataset of fish occurrence records for the entirety of the Rio Grande drainage in the US and Mexico; (2) improve that dataset by reformatting dates, synonymizing species names to a modern taxonomy, georeferencing localities, and flagging geographic outliers; (3) for those species with sufficient data for modeling, create species distribution models (SDMs); (4) use the environmental conditions determined via those models to project the species distributions into the future under two climate scenarios. To accomplish those objectives, we compiled 495,101 fish occurrence records mined from 122 original sources into a single database. We then, on the...

This dataset documents the length and developmental stage of pallid sturgeon and shovelnose sturgeon free embryos from the time of hatch through melanin plug expulsion (the approximate onset of exogenous feeding) reared in the laboratory at a constant temperature. Free embryos from 4 pallid sturgeon crosses and 7 shovelnose sturgeon crosses were reared separately in the laboratory at a mean temperature of 17.8 degrees Celsius (range 17.3–18.4 ). Beginning on the day of hatch, a minimum of three to six free embryos from each cross was randomly sampled and preserved in 10% neutral buffered formalin at 2 to 12-hour intervals, depending on age. Free embryos were microscopically examined and assigned a developmental...

On 20190701, two age groups of pallid sturgeon including 771,707 1-day post-hatch (dph) free embryos and 200,786 5-dph free embryos were released and recaptured through 20190708 from six sampling sites in a 150-mile reach of the Missouri River. The free embryos were sampled using multiple boats and crews at the sites, and sampling for the free embryos was conducted at the river bed (bottom samples), in the middle of the water column (mid-water samples), and at the river surface...

In 2019, an experimental release of nearly 1.0 million free embryos of federally endangered pallid sturgeon (Scaphirhynchus albus) was conducted in the Missouri River of eastern Montana and western North Dakota. Dispersal of the free embryos and survival of the benthic larvae was assessed from 20190701 to 20190909 through 150 miles of the river. The data sets contain mean daily discharge and hourly water temperature data for the Missouri River, and mean daily discharge data for the Yellowstone River. Dates of the data extend from 20190701 to 20190909. Discharge data for the Missouri River were obtained from USGS gage 06177000 near Wolf Point, Montana. Discharge data for the Yellowstone River were obtained from USGS...
