These data were compiled for a manuscript in which 1) we develop a water temperature model for the major river segments and tributaries of the Colorado River basin, including the Colorado, Green, Yampa, White, and San Juan rivers; 2) we link modeled water temperature to fish population data to predict the probability native and nonnative species will be common in the future in a warming climate; and 3) assess the degree to which dams create thermal discontinuity in summer in river segments across the western US. High-resolution geophysical mapping of Lake Powell in the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area in Utah and Arizona was conducted between October 8 and November 15, 2017, as part of a collaborative effort between the U.S. Geological Survey and the Bureau of Reclamation to provide high-quality data needed to reassess the area-capacity tables for the Lake Powell reservoir. These data were compiled to study mercury and selenium concentrations in fish species and assemblages in lotic waterbodies across the Upper Colorado River Basin. Data were compiled from State and Federal agencies. These data were used to examine drivers behind changes in water temperature downriver of dams across the western U.S. from 1995-2015 and the influence of such changes on rainbow trout recruitment and rainbow and brown trout adult length. First, we linked reservoir storage capacity and dam size to the warmest monthly water temperature per water year (WY) to assess the influence of low storage capacity (shallow reservoirs) on downstream water temperature. These data describe the distribution and abundance of Hydropsyche, a widespread and diverse genus of net-spinning caddisflies, in the Colorado River Basin. Abundance data, measured as catch rates, were collected by citizen scientists using light traps. We subsampled Hydropsyche spp. from light trap samples collected throughout the Colorado River Basin and measured the lengths and widths of mesothoracic tibia and first tarsal segments. Samples and measurements were processed at Grand Canyon Monitoring and Research Center in Flagstaff, AZ.
Cosmogenic 26Al and 10Be in alluvial gravel on a strath 150 m above the San Juan River, Utah, reveal a depositional age of 1.36 +0.20 -0.15 Ma. This gravel is correlative with a series of terraces that grade to Glen Canyon on the Colorado River, indicating a similar age for incision there. The calculated incision rate, 110 {+/-} 14 m/m.y., is somewhat slower than that of the Colorado River in the eastern Grand Canyon and suggests active steepening of the Colorado River. The cosmogenic nuclides also indicate rapid erosion in the sediment source area and are consistent with alluviation due to enhanced Pleistocene erosion in the San Juan Mountains. Navajo Reservoir on the San Juan River serves as a water storage, flood control and power generation project for the San Juan River Basin. Because of deep hypolimnetic release from the dam, water temperatures are cooler than natural pre-dam conditions. Post-dam release water temperatures during the summer months are 4-8 �C (39-46 �F) as compared to pre-dam temperatures of 20-25 �C (68-77 �F). Colder water temperatures from the dam to Shiprock (~80 mile; 129 km downstream of the dam) may negatively impact survival of native fish species living below the dam but benefit the tail-water trout fishery (Vanicek, 1967; Holden, 1973; USBR, 2003). Two unique datasets were gathered to document whether flow management for hydropower affects the abundance and diversity of aquatic insect assemblages. The first dataset was collected in Grand Canyon from 2012-2014 by citizen scientists rafting the Colorado River. Simple light traps were set out each night in camp and used to capture the adult life stages of aquatic insects that emerged from the Colorado River. Three aquatic insect taxa were captured in sufficient abundance to analyze statistically including midges (order Diptera, family Chironomidae), micro-caddisflies (order Trichoptera, family Hydroptilidae), and blackflies (order Diptera, family Simuliidae, principally Simulium arcticum). The Lake Powell Coring Project was a USGS research effort, in cooperation with the Utah Department of Environmental Quality, U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, and U.S. National Park Service. In the fall of 2018, hydraulic piston cores targeted sediment that had been deposited in Lake Powell. Thin loess deposits on the uplands of the southeastern Colorado Plateau have previously not been well studied. We sampled deposits and soils from trenches on Hatch Point mesa near Canyonlands National Park, Utah, and from two outcrops in Mesa Verde National Park, Colorado. At Hatch Point, the oldest buried unit yielded two OSL ages of 10,370 and 7,555 yr; the middle unit yielded 10 OSL ages from 6220 to 1385 yr; and the youngest unit has a single age of 1740 yr. At Mesa Verde, three loess units are preserved in the two outcrops we examined; six OSL ages range from 51 to 17 ka.
