Climate Change Health Assessments for Three Coastal, Riverine and Lake System Communities This project evaluates the connections between climate change impacts and health in Bristol Bay communities. Climate change impacts were assessed through the lens of public health, with an eye towards the potential effects on disease, injury, food and water security, and mental health. Three focal communities were included in this assessment: Nondalton, a lake community, Levelock, a river community, and Pilot Point, a coastal community. The resulting assessment reports will be used to assist focal communities, as well as neighboring communities, in addressing climate-change related issues. The purpose was to evaluate the broad range of climate change impacts observed by community members, to identify potential health effects, and to raise awareness and provide guidance that community leadership and the tribal health system could use to help guide planning and intervention activities. These regions are largely protected by mountains areas and do not have a strong maritime influence. Temperatures are moderate and sea ice does form in the Bristol Bay but complete freeze-up of these waterways is not common. Low winter temperatures are below 0 degrees F with events below -20F. Summer temperatures are generally in the mid 60s with only a few days above 80. Highest precipitation is in August and September (Shulsky and Wendler 2007). It is the sixth report in a series describing climate change across Alaska, and the first report to focus on the Bristol Bay Region. In the Yupik and Aleut community of Pilot Point residents report changes to the weather, landscape, plants and wildlife.
