This part of DS 781 presents data for the folds for the geologic and geomorphic map of the Offshore Monterey map area, California. The vector data file is included in "Folds_OffshoreMonterey.zip," which is accessible from http://dx.doi.org/10.3133/ofr20161110. The shelf north and east of the Monterey Bay Peninsula in the Offshore of Monterey map area is cut by a diffuse zone of northwest striking, steeply dipping to vertical faults comprising the Monterey Bay Fault Zone (MBFZ). This zone, originally mapped by Greene (1977, 1990), extends about 45 km across Monterey Bay (Map E on sheet 9). Fault strands within the MBFZ are mapped with high-resolution seismic-reflection profiles (sheet 8). Seismic-reflection profiles...
This part of DS 781 presents data for the paleoshorelines for the geologic and geomorphic map of Offshore Monterey, California. The vector data file is included in "Paleoshorelines_OffshoreMonterey.zip," which is accessible from http://dx.doi.org/10.3133/ofr20161110. Sea level has risen about 125 to 130 m over about the last 21,000 years (for example, Stanford and others, 2011), leading to broadening of the continental shelf, progressive eastward migration of the shoreline, and associated transgressive erosion and deposition. Sea-level rise was apparently not steady, leading to development of a submerged shoreline along the flank of Carmel Canyon (water depths of 80 to 90 m) during a relative stillstand. Paleoshorelines...
This data set contains imagery from the National Agriculture Imagery Program (NAIP). The NAIP program is administered by USDA FSA and has been established to support two main FSA strategic goals centered on agricultural production. These are, increase stewardship of America's natural resources while enhancing the environment, and to ensure commodities are procured and distributed effectively and efficiently to increase food security. The NAIP program supports these goals by acquiring and providing ortho imagery that has been collected during the agricultural growing season in the U.S. The NAIP ortho imagery is tailored to meet FSA requirements and is a fundamental tool used to support FSA farm and conservation programs....

This part of DS 781 presents the seafloor-character map of Offshore of Monterey map area, California. The raster data file is included in "SeafloorCharacter_2m_OffshoreMonterey.zip," which is accessible from http://dx.doi.org/10.3133/ofr20161110. This raster-format seafloor-character map shows four substrate classes in the Offshore of Monterey map area, California. The substrate classes mapped in this area have been colored to indicate which of the following California Marine Life Protection Act depth zones and slope classes they belong: Depth Zone 2 (intertidal to 30 m), Depth Zone 3 (30 to 100 m), Depth Zone 4 (100 to 200 m), Depth Zone 5 (deeper than 200 m), Slope Class 1 (0 degrees - 5 degrees; flat), and Slope...

This part of DS 781 presents data for the acoustic-backscatter map of Offshore of Monterey map area, California. Backscatter data are provided as separate grids depending on Resolution. The raster data files are included in "Backscatter_5m_OffshoreMonterey.zip," which is accessible from http://dx.doi.org/10.3133/ofr20161110. This acoustic-backscatter map of the Offshore of Monterey map area in central California was generated from backscatter data collected by California State University, Monterey Bay (CSUMB) and by Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI). Mapping was completed between 1998 and 2012 using a combination of multibeam echosounders including 200-kHz/400-kHz Reson 7125, 100-kHz Reson 7111, 240...

This part of DS 781 presents data for the habitat map of the seafloor of the Offshore of Monterey map area, California. The vector data file is included in "Habitat_OffshoreMonterey.zip," which is accessible from http://dx.doi.org/10.3133/ofr20161110. This map shows physical marine benthic habitats in the Offshore of Monterey map area. Marine benthic habitats represent a particular type of water quality, substrate, geomorphology, seafloor process, or any other attribute that may provide a habitat for a specific species or an assemblage of organisms. Marine benthic habitats are classified using the Coastal and Marine Ecological Classification Standard (CMECS), developed by representatives from a consortium of federal...

The vector data file is included in "Geology_OffshoreMonterey.zip," which is accessible from http://dx.doi.org/10.3133/ofr20161110. The offshore part of the Offshore of Monterey map area contains two geomorphic regions—(1) the continental shelf, and (2) Carmel Canyon and its tributaries (part of the “Offshore Monterey system” of Greene and others (2002)). The relatively flat continental shelf in the Offshore of Monterey map area consists of exposed bedrock or bedrock overlain by only a thin (< 5 m) cover of sediment). The thickest sediment in the map area (about 16 m) occurs in a broad depression...
