Revegetation and cattle production are major objectives in the reclamation plan for mine tailings at the Highland Valley Copper mine in Canada. Residual molybdenum (Mo) in the tailings is imbibed by vegetation and forages accumulate up to 400 ppm Mo at the Highmont tailings pond. Grazing studies with cattle determined the feasibility of utilising the site for livestock production and published results are reviewed. Clinical evaluations (1999?2001) revealed signs of lameness, diarrhoea and hair coat depigmentation in cows but they recovered without treatment. Supplement trials (2002 ? 2004) demonstrated the efficacy of copper (Cu) sulphate for the alleviation of clinical disorders. Dietary Mo was rapidly eliminated...

Abstract (from Ecological Society of America (ESA): Climate change and urban growth impact habitats, species, and ecosystem services. To buffer against global change, an established adaptation strategy is designing protected areas to increase representation and complementarity of biodiversity features. Uncertainty regarding the scale and magnitude of landscape change complicates reserve planning and exposes decision makers to risk of failing to meet conservation goals. Conservation planning tends to treat risk as an absolute measure, ignoring the context of the management problem and risk preferences of stakeholders. Application to conservation of risk management theory emphasizes diversification of portfolio of...
The offshore insurance industry has traditionally been defined by a “trader” mentality in which companies have been willing to hold risks without attempting to model or further quantify their risk through technical appraisal. The 2005 hurricane season in the Gulf of Mexico changed this perspective, and underwriters began to control their exposure to contingent losses through policy sub-limits and other restrictions on coverage. The purpose of the final part of this two-part article is to quantify the losses to property damage in the Gulf of Mexico for historic weather events using the Risk Management Solutions Offshore Platform Model®. Value at Risk measures indicate that the financial exposure of Gulf assets is...

We measured polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) concentrations in two taxa of riparian spiders from nine sites in 2011 at the Ashtabula River Area of Concern. We analyzed the extracts for 122 congeners following EPA method SW846 Method 8270D using gas chromatography mass spectrometry in the selective ion monitoring (SIM) mode. All target compounds were quantified using the method of internal standards, and all results were reported in ng/g (parts per billion) wet weight. Congener concentrations were summed to arithmetically calculate totals for individual homolog groups (groups of congeners that share the same number of chlorine atoms on the biphenyl ring) and for total PCBs. The samples were also analyzed for lipid...
The concept of managing the environment and any associated human health impacts by means of such science-based tools as toxicological evaluation, risk assessment, and economic appraisal has become widely accepted in professional circles. These increasingly complex methodologies have not won universal support, however, even among the technically minded, and the wider public has in many cases remained sceptical. The public’s seeming lack of enthusiasm has frequently been assigned to ignorance of science, irrationality even, and some attempts have been made to ameliorate the situation by means of education, though with little evidence of success. However, this review advances an alternative explanation, namely, that...
