The California Protected Areas Database (CPAD) contains data on lands owned in fee by governments, non-profits and some private entities that are protected for open space purposes. Data includes all such areas in California, from small urban parks to large national parks and forests, mostly aligned to assessor parcel boundaries. Data is collected by Holdings (parcels) which are aggregated to Units (commonly named areas within counties) and Super Units (commonly named areas generally).
The datatset is a compilation of all permanent (legally established) protected areas in New Brunswick, Canada.

Multiple systems exist classifying the protection status of lands on a national and global scale. To quantify the level of protected status of lands within the SRLCC, a classification scheme developed by the U.S. Geological Survey GAP program was used. This system classifies parcels of land on a 1-4 scale, with 1 being the most protected and 4 the least. Protected Areas Database of the US, PAD-US (CBI Edition) 2012. Conservation Biology Institute. The use of digital information to aid in land management decision making has become a standardized practice over the last 20 years. However, gathering this information for regional and national level analysis is problematic due to the number of organizations holding and gathering data along with compatibility issues within the data. Protected lands are a key component to landscape conservation efforts of the LCC’s and are also one of the keys to developing a response to climate change impacts. Many efforts, such as the Protected Areas Database (PAD) created by the Conservation Biology Institute and USGS have been undertaken, but these have largely focused on lands conserved in fee. The National Conservation Easement...

The Desert LCC identified the need for a Protected Areas spatial database that showed land ownership, management designations and conservation status for lands in the United States and Mexico. However, the existing Protected Areas database was found to be particularly prone to boundary and database errors that affected its potential use. This USGS project will develop a single, seamless, error-free Protected Areas dataset for the full geographic scope of the Desert LCC. This will involve acquiring numerous spatial layers from Federal, State, and NGO organizations which are responsible for administering and/or managing areas that have a designated protected status. Protected Area will be categorized as defined by...

(A newer version of these data is now available, Protected Areas - Michigan, October 2012 ) This dataset is an extraction from PAD-US 1.1 (CBI Edition), by state. The PAD-US 1.1 (CBI Edition) data set portrays the nation's protected areas with a standardized spatial geometry and numerous valuable attributes on land ownership, management designations, and conservation status (using national GAP and international IUCN coding systems). The PAD-US 1.1 (CBI Edition) defines protected areas to include all lands dedicated to the preservation of biological diversity and to other natural, recreation and cultural uses, and managed for these purposes through legal or other effective means (adapted from IUCN definition). The...
