Based on forest patch area, location, and hydrologic influence, we ranked the purported need of forest patches for additional conservation-protection. Qualities for higher ranking included forest patches with & greater than 2000 ha of core-forest that was more than 250 m from an edge, forest patches within high priority areas for reforestation, and forest patches with less propensity for flooding. Digital data are provided for: 1. Boundary of the Mississippi Alluvial Valley study area. 2. Forest cover (circa 2015) used to for determination of forest area in need of conservation protection. 3. The conservation estate (circa 2019) that had conservation protection by virtue of ownership, easement, or servitude. 4....

The Protected natural areas of the U.S. Virgin Islands, compiled and identified by the U.S. Virgin Islands Gap Analysis Project (USVIGAP), display terrestrial protected natural areas designated for natural resource conservation in the U.S. Virgin Islands, as well as areas with government regulation that have the potential to protect natural resources. The protection of natural areas is an essential step in conserving biodiversity and maintaining ecosystem services. The benefits and services provided by natural areas include clean water and air, sustainable wildlife populations and habitats, stable slopes and productive soils, genetic reservoirs, recreational opportunities and spiritual refugia. These benefits are...

The use of digital information to aid in land management decision making has become a standardized practice over the last 20 years. However, gathering this information for regional and national level analysis is problematic due to the number of organizations holding and gathering data along with compatibility issues within the data. Protected lands are a key component to landscape conservation efforts of the LCC’s and are also one of the keys to developing a response to climate change impacts. Many efforts, such as the Protected Areas Database (PAD) created by the Conservation Biology Institute and USGS have been undertaken, but these have largely focused on lands conserved in fee. The National Conservation Easement...

The Desert LCC identified the need for a Protected Areas spatial database that showed land ownership, management designations and conservation status for lands in the United States and Mexico. However, the existing Protected Areas database was found to be particularly prone to boundary and database errors that affected its potential use. This USGS project will develop a single, seamless, error-free Protected Areas dataset for the full geographic scope of the Desert LCC. This will involve acquiring numerous spatial layers from Federal, State, and NGO organizations which are responsible for administering and/or managing areas that have a designated protected status. Protected Area will be categorized as defined by...

Multiple systems exist classifying the protection status of lands on a national and global scale. To quantify the level of protected status of lands within the SRLCC, a classification scheme developed by the U.S. Geological Survey GAP program was used. This system classifies parcels of land on a 1-4 scale, with 1 being the most protected and 4 the least. Protected Areas Database of the US, PAD-US (CBI Edition) 2012. Conservation Biology Institute. These data represent a potential Conservation Target of the Working Lands Priority Resource (PR) for the PFLCC. Working Lands were delineated by extracting forestry and agriculture related land covers from the Cooperative Land Cover v. 3.2 (December 2016) and then refined using CLIP 4.0 Aggregated Model. The Critical Lands and Waters Identification Project (CLIP) is a collection of spatial data that identify statewide priorities for a broad range of natural resources in Florida. For additional information and metadata regarding the CLIP project see the Critical Lands and Waters Identification Project gallery found on the PFLCC’s Conservation Planning Atlas website (https://pflcc.databasin.org/galleries/47674f339d6d4780b2d17d0ec89bea1f)....

This product consists of 29 datasets of tabular data and associated metadata for watershed characteristics of 1,530 study sites of the Surface Water Trends (SWT) project of the U.S. Geological Survey’s (USGS) National Water Quality Program (NWQP). The project is conducting national studies of trends in water quality of streams and rivers for periods ranging from 10 to 40 years, between 1972 and 2012. The data here include both static and time-series characteristics. Static data include primarily physical characteristics which have changed little over this period, such as geology, soils, and topography. Time-series data represent characteristics which may or may not have changed over time, such as land use, agricultural...

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) - Science Analytics and Synthesis (SAS) - Gap Analysis Project (GAP) manages the Protected Areas Database of the United States (PAD-US), an Arc10x geodatabase, that includes a full inventory of areas dedicated to the preservation of biological diversity and to other natural, recreation, historic, and cultural uses, managed for these purposes through legal or other effective means. The PAD-US is developed in partnership with many organizations, including coordination groups at the [U.S.] Federal level, lead organizations for each State, and a number of national and other non-governmental organizations whose work is closely related to the PAD-US. The Protected Areas Database of the United States (PAD-US) is a GIS database hosted by the USGS Gap Analysis Program (GAP) that illustrates and describes public land ownership, management and conservation lands nationally, including voluntarily provided privately protected areas. Version 1.2 of this data set was released by GAP in April, 2011 and can be downloaded from the USGS PAD-US web site (data available in geodatabase and shape file formats). The web site includes an online map viewer for the data as well as information on PAD-US standards, core attribute schema and a summary of commonly requested statistics. GAP compiled the Protected Areas Database of the United States (PAD-US) version 1.1 with significant...

The Protected Areas Database of the United States (PAD-US) is a geodatabase that illustrates and describes public land ownership, management and conservation lands nationally, including voluntarily provided privately protected areas. The lands included in PAD-US are assigned conservation measures that qualify their intent to manage lands for the preservation of biological diversity and to other natural, recreational and cultural uses; managed for these purposes through legal or other effective means. This polygon data set includes the protected areas of North America that are managed by national, state, provincial, or territorial authorities. As defined by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN), a protected area is an “area of land and/or sea especially dedicated to the protection and maintenance of biological diversity, and of natural and associated cultural resources, and managed through legal or other effective means.” The data set was assembled from other public data sets containing data on protected areas in Canada, Mexico, and the United States. Protected area data were obtained from Natural Resources Canada and the Quebec Ministry of Sustainable Development, Environment and Parks...

Prioritization for protection of habitat (via acquisition or easements), based on local scale ecological integrity, degree of threats faced, potential conservation opportunities, and conservation value of surrounding landscape. In contrast to ecological integrity ratings; threat, opportunity and landscape rankings are largely based on the range of values of any given indicator across the geography, sorted by quantile. There are some exceptions, particularly for indicators used to develop threat rankings (e.g., urban development risk). EEMS is a tree-based, fuzzy logic modeling system, where output values range from -1 to +1, indicating whether a given output is entirely FALSE or TRUE, respectively. Indicators with...
