This dataset represents lineaments in the Powder River Basin as identified in the following publication: Anna, L.O., 1986, Geologic framework of the ground water system in Jurassic and Cretaceous rocks on the Northern Great Plains, in parts of Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wyoming: U.S. Geological Survey Professional Paper 1402-B, 36 p. Structural features were transferred from the publication to a hard-copy base map by province geologist, then digitized and referenced for use in a Geographic Information System (GIS). Structural may: 1) enhance secondary reservoir permeability and 2) provide migration pathways in unconventional rocks.

This dataset represents lineaments in the Powder River Basin as identified in the following publication: Slack, P. B., 1981, Paleotectonics and hydrocarbon accumulation, Powder River basin, Wyoming: American Association of Petroleum Geologists Bulletin, v. 65, no. 4, p. 730-743. A lineament is defined as a linear topographic feature of regional extent that is believed to reflect crustal structure (Hobbs et al., 1976, p. 267). Lineament features were transferred from the publication to a hard-copy base map by province geologist, then digitized and referenced for use in a Geographic Information System (GIS). Lineaments may: 1) enhance secondary reservoir permeability and 2) provide migration pathways in unconventional...

This ArcView shapefile contains a polygon representation of numerous themes associated with the Wyodak-Anderson coal zone in the Sheridan coalfield. The purpose of this theme is to allow the user to perform multiple theme queries. This theme was created specifically for the National Coal Resource Assessment in the Northern Rocky Mountains and Great Plains Region.

Under the direction and funding of the National Cooperative Geologic Mapping Program (NCGMP) with guidance and encouragement from the United States Geological Survey (USGS), there has been a decadal strategic plan in place to call for geologic mapping across the nation. This call has been increasing the need for digital data that has not yet been made available. With such a demand, physical data is being re-released as vector-based, GIS operable data, which is viable as a corporate asset to the USGS. This collection of reports is part of the compilation and synthesis efforts hampered by the distributed nature of subsurface investigations at the USGS and a general lack of cataloging and archiving of 3-D geological...

This is a coverage of surface and Federal mineral ownership in the Powder River Basin area, Montana and Wyoming. This coverage is the combination of several ARC/INFO coverages and MOSS format files that were collected from the BLM, reformatted as needed, modified, and/or created by the USGS from hard copy BLM 1:100,000-scale surface and mineral management status maps. The Powder River Basin has the largest in-place coal resources of any field in the contiguous U.S. (Keystone, 1997), and produces over one-fourth of the Nation's total coal production (The Mining Record, 1997). In the Powder River Basin, very little of the surface is Federal land, yet almost all of the coal is Federally owned.

These ArcView shapefiles contain: 1) a representation of thickness of overburden above the Anderson-Canyon coal zone, and 2) a representation of exposed zone for the Anderson-Canyon coal zone in the Decker coalfield, Powder River Basin, Montana. These themes were created specifically for the National Coal Resources Assessment in the Northern Rocky Mountains and Great Plains Region.

This dataset represents lineaments in the Powder River Basin as identified in the following publication: Maughan, E.K., and Perry, W.J., Jr., 1986, Lineaments and their tectonic implications in the Rocky Mountains and adjacent plains region: in Peterson, J.A., ed, Paleotectonics and Sedimentation in the Rocky Mountain Region, United States: American Association of Petroleum Geologists Memoir 41, pp. 41-56. A lineament is defined as a linear topographic feature of regional extent that is believed to reflect crustal structure (Hobbs et al., 1976, p. 267). Cell maps for each oil and gas assessment unit were created by the USGS as a method for illustrating the degree of exploration, type of production, and distribution of production in an assessment unit or province. Each cell represents a quarter-mile square of the land surface, and the cells are coded to represent whether the wells included within the cell are predominantly oil-producing, gas-producing, both oil and gas-producing, dry, or the type of production of the wells located within the cell is unknown. The well information was initially retrieved from the IHS Energy Group, PI/Dwights PLUS Well Data on CD-ROM, which is a proprietary, commercial database containing information for most oil and gas wells in the...

The USGS Central Region Energy Team assesses oil and gas resources of the United States. The onshore and State water areas of the United States comprise 71 provinces. Within these provinces, hydrocarbon plays were defined and assessed. Each of these provinces is defined geologically, and most province boundaries are defined by major geologic changes. The province boundaries were drawn on the county lines that most closely followed the natural geologic boundaries.
