Conservation Design for Freshwater Mussels: Designing a Decision Support Tool for the Louisiana Pearlshell Mussel
A presentation describing the planned prioritization model for identifying potentially suitable but currently unoccupied habitats to target search and restoration efforts for the federally-threatened Louisiana Pearlshell Mussel, from an early stage in the project.
The objectives of this open pine and woodland rapid ecological assessment are to provide information about (1) how much and where the pine-dominated landscapes in the GCPO meet the criteria for open pine habitat as defined in the Integrated Science Agenda (ISA), (2) how much more such habitat is needed, and (3) where opportunities exist to manage for these conditions (through thinning, burning, reforestation, enhancement, etc.). The ISA defines the desired ecological state for open pine as “woodlands and savannas that are floristically rich and comprised mostly of site-appropriate pine with low basal area, open canopies, and dense herbaceous understories in large interconnected blocks.”
Landscape-based population viability models demonstrate importance of strategic conservation planning for birds
Efforts to conserve regional biodiversity in the face of global climate change, habitat loss and fragmentation will depend on approaches that consider population processes at multiple scales. By combining habitat and demographic modeling, landscape-based population viability models effectively relate small-scale habitat and landscape patterns to regional population viability. This project links downscaled climate data to an ecosystem model (LINKAGES) to a landscape simulator (LANDIS) to wildlife models (HSI). Collectively, these models offer a means to assess the response of wildlife to climate change - mediated through habitat.
Final Report: Changes in Forested Landscapes of Gulf Coastal Plains and Ozarks Under Alternative Climate and Urban Growth Scenarios
This research will (1) develop a multi-model application to simulate streamflow using a monthly water balance model and daily time step hydrologic models (physical-process based and statistical) for all watersheds of the Gulf Coastal Plains and Ozarks Landscape Conservation Cooperative and (2) provide products from these models (flow characteristics - magnitude, timing, duration, rate of change, and frequency) for a range of configurations (current and future climate and landscape) through a web interface which can be used to inform management decisions.

This project represents the first attempt to map floodplain inundation frequency at the landscape scale in the south central United States. Using 15-40 images per Landsat scene, we established a wide range of possible flood frequencies across a variety of rising and falling river stages. This method represents a flexible approach that can be configured to define habitat availability for a variety of terrestrial and aquatic species.

The Open Space Institute (OSI) disseminated knowledge and tools across the northeast U.S. and the Canadian Maritimes to advance the application of NA LCC data sets for land conservation. Guidance documents were developed to help organizations build buy-in from their constituents, learn from past applications of the data, and develop strategic planning for conservation. The documents were informed by surveys, field tested and distributed by established leaders in assisting land trusts in conservation planning. The Conservation Blueprint provides a foundation to design strategies for collaborative conservation effort to achieve sustainable landscapes in the face of change. It builds on the Ecological Assesment project to develop a set of linked geospatial data products related to the nine priority systems of the GCPO LCC to provide a scientific (i.e. transparent, replicable & defensible) approach to identifying the next best places for collaborative conservation effort toward the partnership’s shared vision.

Monitoring the Effects of Climate Change on Waterfowl Abundance in the Mississippi Alluvial Valley: Optimizing Sampling Efficacy and Efficiency.
Building off the successes of the stratified random sampling approach to selecting aerial transects for waterfowl surveying used by Mississippi and Arkansas, the waterfowl conservation community is undertaking this approach across the entire Mississippi Alluvial Valley. Waterfowl respond directly to climate factors and this approach allows for statistically valid estimates that can track trends over time.

Watersheds (HUC12) ranked by the presence, quantity and quality of the Grasslands habitat system (includes prairie, pasture, and haylands) within the 5 sub-geographies of the GCPO LCC region. Once ranked, watersheds were classified (e.g., “Top 10%”) based on the proportion of the total Grasslands area (current + potential) contained within the watershed.
Completing Northeast Regional Vulnerability Assessment Incorporating the NatureServe Climate Change Vulnerability Index
Numerous studies show that ongoing climate change will have major effects on the distribution and conservation status of much of our biodiversity. Resource managers urgently need a means to identify which species and habitats are most vulnerable to decline in order to direct resources where they will be most effective. Freshwater Aquatic Landscape Condition and Species Endpoints for the Gulf Coastal Plains and Ozarks Landscape Conservation Cooperative Region
The Southeast Aquatic Resources Partnership will engage regional aquatic experts to provide input into the development of desired ecological states - defined by landscape and species endpoints - for each of the broadly defined Freshwater Aquatic habitat types listed in the Gulf Coastal Plains and Ozarks Landscape Conservation Cooperative’s draft Integrated Science Agenda. The final product will include recommendations for next steps to validate and achieve the desired landscape conditions, including potential modeling and tool development to facilitate spatial projection of final desired states.
