The U.S. Geological Survey's Upper Midwest Environmental Sciences Center (UMESC) has created high-resolution land cover/use data sets for the Upper Mississippi River System (UMRS) from 1:15,000-scale color infrared aerial photos. These data have been used to create a variety of products, one of which is a data set used to classify aquatic areas. The 1989 and 1991 aquatic areas data sets were created by first generalizing the available land cover/use data into a land/water data set, then reinterpreting the aerial photography within the areas classified as water to determine the type of aquatic area. This data set consists of monthly averages of soil and litter properties. Rows are grouped in the following order: year, month, vegetation type, plot ID. Within a single month five plots were sampled within each of the 2 vegetation types (10 plots total). Columns F+ represent individual measurements.

The Long Term Resource Monitoring (LTRM) annual fish monitoring began on the Upper Mississippi and Illinois Rivers in 1989. During the first two years samples were collected at a series of fixed sampling sites, then in 1993 a stratified random sampling approach was added to the collection effort. This approach utilizes a computer routine that randomly selects sampling sites from a pool of potential sites that have been categorized by strata (e.g., aquatic habitat type, distance to shore, connectivity to main channel). The results from these collections are stored in an Oracle database at the Upper Midwest Environmental Science Center (UMESC). The Long Term Resource Monitoring (LTRM) program employs a destructive harvest method for sampling aquatic vegetation whereby a rake is dragged ~1.5 m over the substrate and plant materials are retrieved. The density of each species of submersed aquatic vegetation (SAV), and of all species combined, are scored based on the amount of plant material collected on the teeth of each rake. Plant density (PD) scores are ordered and vary from 0 (no plants captured) to 5 (80-100% of rake teeth covered). The PD score of 1 has represented the vast majority of all non-zero values since 1998 and is associated with a wide range of biomass (e.g. <1g to 694g fresh weight in Pools 4 and 8 during the 2017 field season). The U.S. Geological Survey's Upper Midwest Environmental Sciences Center (UMESC) has created high-resolution land cover/use data sets for the Upper Mississippi River System (UMRS). Aerial images of Pools 1-13 Upper Mississippi River System and Pools, Alton-Marseilles, Illinois River were collected in color infrared (CIR) in August of 2010 at 8”/pixel and 16”/pixel respectively using a mapping-grade Applanix DSS 439 digital aerial camera. In August 2011, CIR aerial images of Pools 14-Open River South, Upper Mississippi River and Pools Dresden-Lockport, Illinois River were collected at 16”/pixel with the same camera. The Yin et al. 2000 rake method is used by researchers in the Upper Mississippi River Restoration Program to estimate the distribution of submersed aquatic vegetation on the Upper Mississippi River System. Biomass data were collected in 2001 to assess if the Yin et al. 2000 method could be used to estimate biomass based on the rake density ratings. Sediment samples also were collected to measure sediment nitrogen availability and particle size.
