The Conservation Efforts Database is a joint effort by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Services and U.S. Geological Survey to collect data on federally listed candidate, threatened, and endangered species. The goal of the Conservation Efforts Database is to efficiently and effectively collect and analyze ongoing conservation efforts for unlisted, candidate, and listed species alike. Understanding the distribution and type of conservation actions happening across the landscape will allow visualization and quantification of the extent to which threats are being addressed. Currently (2015), this database contains only information on the Greater sage-grouse. However, it could also be useful beyond Greater sage-grouse conservation...

Fishery and aquatic scientists often assess habitats to understand the distribution, status, threats, and relative abundance of aquatic resources. Due to the spatial nature of habitats and associated temporal changes, using traditional analytical methods is often difficult. This project developed habitat assessment models and outputs for the North Atlantic Landscape Conservation Cooperative region that are based on a stakeholder driven process. In addition to assessing habitat conditions, GIS decision support tools were developed and provided to assist with resource planning efforts, at both the regional and site-specific scale.Downstream Strategies (DS), together the North Atlantic Landscape Conservation Cooperative...

Groundwater pumping for irrigated agriculture has depleted regional aquifers that sustain habitat for native fishes in the western Great Plains of North America. Depleted surface stream flow is implicated in the decline of 69% of endemic Great Plains fishes, including conservation priority species such as the Arkansas River shiner Notropis girardi. Species declines are likely to continue as water demands increase. Knowledge of spatial patterns of hydrologic connectivity and rates and magnitude of fragmentation through time will help prioritize areas for native fish conservation. We propose to use groundwater-surface water models to document and map the spatiotemporal distribution of flowing and intermittent stream...

The compilation of an accurate and contemporary digital shoreline for Alaska is an important step in understanding coastal processes and measuring changes in coastal storm characteristics. Consistent with efforts by the United States National Park Service (NPS) at Bering Land Bridge National Preserve (BELA) and Cape Krusenstern National Monument, high quality, defensible digital shoreline datasets are under development for select coastal parks in the State of Alaska. Near BELA, for the area from Cape Prince of Wales to Cape Espenberg, extended revised shoreline coverage can be produced using true color coastal shoreline imagery to update the boundary demarking the mean high water (MHW) shoreline, which represents...
Project 1. Coordinated monitoring of fire impacts throughout the South AtlanticFunding from Wildland Fire Resilient Landscapes is supporting prescribed fire on land managed by a diversity of public and private organizations, many of which have established protocols for monitoring fire effects. Some only monitor vegetation, while others monitor additional impacts on species and ecological processes. Our team proposes to work with key partners to integrate data from existing monitoring and improve the coordination of future fire monitoring in the South Atlantic. Efforts will build off of existing cross-organizational efforts to coordinate fire impacts monitoring in pine ecosystems with a special emphasis on rapid,...

Urban communities are increasingly shaping the conservation future of the South Atlantic. Major metropolitan areas present both direct threats, such as loss habitat and open space, and indirect threats, such as creating barriers to connectivity. As a result of both these direct and indirect threats, and their scale, metropolitan areas pose a challenge when thinking about corridors and connectivity, and many of the traditional approaches to green infrastructure and conservation are not adequate for urban areas. The Conservation Blueprint (Blueprint) is cross-boundary, cross-organization plan that prioritizes areas for shared conservation action in the South Atlantic. It is designed as a resource for conservation...

The objective is to create a hydrologic foundation for detailed assessment of human and climate impacts on stream and river flows, including the impacts of hydrologic alterations on aquatic habitats. A specific application will be to support implementation of ELOHA, the Ecological Limits of Hydrologic Alteration, a scientific framework for determining environmental flow needs for all rivers and streams throughout a very large region. During Year 1, we will model pre-development (unaltered) daily flows for 1960-2006 for every enhanced national hydrography dataset (NHDPLUSPlus) catchment within the SALCC. We will also model current condition daily flows over the same time period for at least 6 watersheds using available...

The potential implications of climate change to fishes in Great Plains rivers and streams could range from drastic shifts in distribution to extirpation. Many lotic systems in the Great Plains are not well suited for direct escape routes for fish to move to more suitable habitats at other latitudes due to the west-east direction of flows rather than north-south. Therefore, we might expect additional climate related stress on fish communities in the Great Plains compared to other regions of North America. Therefore, we will 1) simulate potential water temperature and flow changes within the Great Plains based on extant regional climate models, 2) assess stream connectivity to potential refugia, 3) develop a database...

This project documented the traditional ecosystem management practices of the Gwich’in and Koyukon community of Beaver, Alaska through the collection of oral histories. The findings provide insight and understanding into the culturally-based rules which guided management and relationships between people, landscapes, and food resources to ensure sustainable yield within the northwest boreal forest and developed a suite of principles for sustainable, productive boreal ecosystems.
The Northwest Boreal Landscape Conservation Cooperative (NWB LCC) is a partnership between agencies involved in land management across Alaska, Yukon, Northwest Territories, and British Columbia. The NWB LCC aims to coordinate science and support to decision makers for improving land management decisions. Knowledge gaps have been identified by the NWB LCC and are beginning to be filled. One of the priority information gaps is knowledge of the anthropogenic footprint currently on the landscape. The anthropogenic footprint is all the disturbance types made by various human activities, usually through some form of industrial development. Examples include roads, power lines, pipelines, and clear cuts among many others....

To inform management for a resilient and functioning landscape, we need to understand how the landscape is changing. The Northwest Boreal Landscape Conservation Cooperative, working with a diverse group of managers and stakeholders, initiated development of a coordinated monitoring system for the northwest boreal ecoregion in 2016. The goal for the coordinated monitoring system is to provide a set of common denominators (i.e., minimum standards) that will allow cooperators to combine monitoring data to make landscape-scale inferences. The monitoring system is intended to detect landscape-scale changes related to climate change or human disturbance. This effort is intended to leverage limited monitoring resources...
The Alaska Center for Conservation Science at the University of Alaska Anchorage, in partnership with the Northwest Boreal Landscape Conservation Cooperative, embarked on a project to map and quantify the human footprint across interior Alaska and northwestern Canada. The goal was to build a seamless dataset that spanned state, provincial and territorial boundaries to represent an initial look at intactness in the boreal ecosystems of western Canada and Alaska. This project builds upon work done by Ducks Unlimited Canada. Although our goal was to create a comprehensive representation of these footprint activities, we were limited to data that was publicly available, so this likely represents an underestimation of...
Partners developed a simulation model to better show how various projections associated with increased marine traffic in the Bering Sea might look in the coming decades. These simulations are able to help communities and managers better understand future patterns of traffic in the Bering Sea region as a whole, and look more specifically at possible changes in key areas of concern like the Bering Strait.Following vessel activity analysis and considering vessel type, transit routes, route timing, routing speed, and ports of call, we developed a novel agent-based, spatially-explicit, baseline model of current marine vessel traffic patterns. We then applied projections about changes in traffic volume from a report by...

The concept of adaptive management provides a set of good business principles to guide strategic habitat conservation, but these principles are only useful if they are put into practice through a complimentary set of business operations. To that end, if conservation is going to be successful operating at landscape scales, the conservation community must start thinking and functioning like a conservation enterprise. Much more emphasis must be placed on developing and supporting business operations that facilitate the flow of information and other resources at landscape scales. Just like successful national and global businesses, we need to develop an information supply chain to support the communication, coordination,...
