CalHABMAP provides updates on current algal blooms and facilitates information exchange among HAB researchers, managers and the general public in California. A major component of this program is regional HAB monitoring. Water samples and net tows are collected once per week to monitor for HAB species and naturally occurring algal toxins. Water quality data including temperature, salinity, and nutrients are also collected.

Transformations of phosphate (Pi) in different soil fractions were tracked using the stable isotopic composition of oxygen in phosphate (δ18Op) and Pi concentrations. Clay soil from Israel was treated with either reclaimed waste water (secondary, low grade) or with fresh water amended with a chemical fertilizer of a known isotopic signature. Changes of δ18Op and Pi within different soil fractions, during a month of incubation, elucidate biogeochemical processes in the soil, revealing the biological and the chemical transformation impacting the various P pools. The Bureau of Mines through their contractor, Zellars-Williams, Inc. (ZWI), conducted a twelve month investigation of Florida phosphate re- sources for entry into the Minerals Availability System (MAS). Data was collected from known literature, mineral interests now developing or pro- ducing phosphate rock, large landholders, and governmental agencies on a regional, deposit summary, or individual prospect hole data base. Operating and capital cost estimates assignable in the MAS to operating or projected ( "C ") deposits were prepared by modeling six case mines, based on nominal ranges of size, age, and quality of ore. A seasonal analysis assesing variations in the oxygen isotopic composition of dissolved inorganic phosphate (DIP) was conducted in the San Francisco Bay estuarine system, California. Isotopic fractionation of oxygen in DIP (exchange of oxygen between phosphate and environmental water) at surface water temperatures occurs only as a result of enzyme-mediated, biological reactions. Accordingly, if phospate demand is low relative to input and phosphate is not heavily cycled in the ecosystem, the oxygen isotopic composition of DIP (δ18Op) will reflect the isotopic composition of the source of phosphate to the system. In most soils, inorganic phosphorus occurs at fairly low concentrations in the soil solution whilst a large proportion of it is more or less strongly held by diverse soil minerals. Phosphate ions can indeed be adsorbed onto positively charged minerals such as Fe and Al oxides. Phosphate (P) ions can also form a range of minerals in combination with metals such as Ca, Fe and Al. These adsorption/desorption and precipitation/dissolution equilibria control the concentration of P in the soil solution and, thereby, both its chemical mobility and bioavailability.
