This dataset is HUC6s in Washington used to summarize information from an analysis of the risk of agricultural pesticide use to groundwater contamination. This dataset is part of a larger groundwater project across the Pacific NW (Brown et al. 2009) region which has two primary goals: (1) develop tools to identify where and how groundwater is important to biodiversity conservation and (2) assess the pressing threats to the quantity and quality of that groundwater and develop strategies to abate those threats. Concentrations of organic contaminants in common productive soils based on the total soil mass give a misleading account of actual contamination effects. This is attributed to the fact that productive soils are essentially water-saturated, with the result that the soil uptake of organic compounds occurs principally by partition into the soil organic matter (SOM). This report illustrates that the soil contamination intensity of a compound is governed by the concentration in the SOM (Com) rather than by the concentration in whole soil (Cs). The Ogallala aquifer is contained in the Tertiary-age Ogallala Formation in the Texas Panhandle and is the primary water-bearing hydrogeologic unit of the High Plains aquifer system. The Ogallala aquifer is the primary source of water used for agricultural and municipal purposes in the Texas Panhandle. This dataset consists of a series of 1-kilometer rasters which provide a mapping of the estimated use of 101 agricultural pesticide compounds for the conterminous United States. Each compound is mapped annually for the years 2013 through 2017, thus there are 505 rasters posted (101 compounds x 5 years). The datasets were created by taking previously-published county-level estimates of kilograms of agricultural pesticide use, then allocating them to agricultural pixels from the 2016 National Land Cover Database, aggregated to 1-kilometer spatial resolution.

The National Water Quality Network (NWQN) for Rivers and Streams includes 113 surface-water river and stream sites monitored by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) National Water Quality Program (NWQP). The NWQN represents the consolidation of four historical national networks: the USGS National Water-Quality Assessment (NAWQA) Project, the USGS National Stream Quality Accounting Network (NASQAN), the National Monitoring Network (NMN), and the Hydrologic Benchmark Network (HBN). These data represents annual estimates of neonicotinoid nitroguanidine group insecticide application rates across the western conterminous United States from 2008 to 2014. This product contains seven raster layers (appearing as separate bands in a multi-band raster). Each band represents one year of the data beginning in 2008. Estimates are generated by pairing crop specific application rates of neonicotinoids with fine scale crop data obtained from the CropScape cropland data layer. Application units are kilograms per hectare. Direct and indirect ecological effects of the widely used insecticide bifenthrin on stream ecosystems are largely unknown. To investigate such effects, a manipulative experiment was conducted in stream mesocosms that were colonized by aquatic insect communities and exposed to bifenthrin-contaminated sediment; implications for natural streams were interpreted through comparison of mesocosm results to a survey of 100 Midwestern streams, USA. Pesticide leaching through variably thick soils beneath agricultural fields in Morgan Creek, Maryland was simulated for water years 1995 to 2004 using LEACHM (Leaching Estimation and Chemistry Model). Fifteen individual models were constructed to simulate five depths and three crop rotations with associated pesticide applications. Unsaturated zone thickness averaged 4.7 m but reached a maximum of 18.7 m. Average annual recharge to ground water decreased from 15.9 to 11.1 cm as the unsaturated zone increased in thickness from 1 to 10 m. Estimating the annual mass flux at a network of fixed stations is one approach to characterizing water quality of large rivers. The interpretive context provided by annual flux includes identifying source and sink areas for constituents and estimating the loadings to receiving waters, such as reservoirs or the ocean. Since 1995, the US Geological Survey's National Stream Quality Accounting Network (NASQAN) has employed this approach at a network of 39 stations in four of the largest river basins of the USA: the Mississippi, the Columbia, the Colorado and the Rio Grande. This data release contains two tables-one table of field spike recovery data and one table of lab reagent spike recovery data-for pesticides and pesticide degradates analyzed by the USGS National Water Quality Laboratory (NWQL) schedule 2437, and associated metadata. The table of field spike recovery data includes results from paired environmental and spike samples collected by the National Water Quality Program, National Water-Quality Assessment (NAWQA) Project in surface water. These datasets contain all publicly available analytical data collected by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) at each location sampled by the Pennsylvania Pesticides in Vulnerable Groundwaters program from 2021 and 2022. In 2000–2002, three rangeland and six irrigated sites were instrumented to assess the storage and transit time of chemicals in thick (15 to 50 m) unsaturated zones (UZ) in the High Plains. These processes are likely to influence relations between land use and groundwater quality, yet they have not been documented systematically in the High Plains.
