Habitat fragmentation is considered to be a leading cause that is responsible for the long-term population declines of Northern Bobwhites. There are numerous factors responsible for habitat fragmentation such as expanding suburbanization, intensification of agricultural and forestry practices, and invasions of exotic plants; the unifying theme is how people use land for settlement and the production of food and fiber. As patches of habitat become smaller and more isolated, populations experience a lower probability of persistence that results in local extinctions, which can lead to larger, and perhaps even regional extinctions. However, we lack a strong empirical and quantified basis that describes the numerical...

This map represents a potential Conservation Target (CT) for PFLCC's 'Pine Flatwoods and Dry Prairie' (PFDP) Priority Resource (PR). The potential CT is 'Open Pine Bird Index.'The birds included in this index are: Bachman's Sparrow, Northern Bobwhite, and Red-cockaded Woodpecker. These layers were created for an initial investigation of potential CT's suggested by stakeholders during brainstorming workshops. The initial investigation entails locating available datasets to address the suggested CT as closely as possible and performing minimal analyses to determine their usefulness. The final set of CT's and their associated datasets will be chosen after targets (e.g., endpoints) are established as a threshold for...

Habitat fragmentation and degradation are considered to be a leading causes of long-term population declines of Northern Bobwhites and many other species of grassland birds, such as Eastern Meadowlark. Research is needed to understand the factors causing habitat loss and fragmentation and to identify the areas that are high-probability candidates for successful restoration so that optimal decisions can be made. For example, uncertainty exists regarding the impacts of energy development activities or climate change that affect significant portions of wildlife populations in the GCP LCC. Furthermore, changing land ownership coupled with woody shrub and exotic grass encroachment have reduced the amount and quality...

BWQuailConcentrationArea is an ESRI SDE Feature Class showing Concentration Areas for Bobwhite Quail (Colinus virginianus) in Colorado. Concentration Areas are defined as areas within the overall range where densities of Bobwhite Quail are much higher than the surrounding ranges. This information was derived from field personnel. A variety of data capture techniques were used including drawing on mylar overlays at 1:50,000 scale USGS county mapsheets and implementation of the SmartBoard Interactive Whiteboard using stand-up, real-time digitizing at various scales (Cowardin, M., M. Flenner. March 2003. Maximizing Mapping Resources. GeoWorld 16(3):32-35). Dataset was acquired from a third party distributor who obtained...

This dataset was created to locate source populations of quail in the West Gulf Coastal Plain. The values in this raster depict the number of birds in a 4,500 ha area. The Lower Mississippi Valley Joint Venture used the value of at least 400 birds per 4,500 ha to define a source population. However, this raster contains the "raw" numbers so the user can experiment with thresholds. In this raster the numbers represent quail per 4,500 hectares, and the raster is comprised of 500 hectare pixels.

The northern bobwhite (Colinus virginianus) has experienced range wide declines over the last several decades, primarily because of reduction to habitat through loss and fragmentation. For studies on population decline and habitat, spatial scale is very important: the effects of habitat structure at local spatial scales may depend on the larger landscape scale, and patterns may be more evident at different scales. As northern bobwhite populations continue to decline, there is a need for studies that address habitat changes and their impact on northern bobwhite population trends and persistence at three spatial scales (regional, county, and home range). Our goal was to assess changes in habitat and land use and their...

Northern Bobwhite This layer is one of the South Atlantic LCC indicators in the pine woodland, savanna and prairies ecosystem. To read more about the indicators and how they are being used, please visit the indicator page. Description The National Bobwhite Technical Committee used an extensive series of workshops, and revision workshops, where a multitude of experts conducted a spatially explicitly habitat ranking based on GIS data and local expert knowledge (The National Bobwhite Technical Committee 2011). Bobwhite habitat suitability was ranked from low to high; for our purposes, we targeted the highest ranking, "high." GIS Processing All indicators were initially computed, or in the case of existing...

Loss and fragmentation of grassland habitat can influence populations of the animal communities dependent upon this ecosystem. Grassland birds have faced notable declines in some areas of their range, potentially a result of changes to suitable habitat. Managing populations of grassland birds requires an understanding of the effects of habitat loss and fragmentation at a local and regional scale. We studied two grassland-dependent bird species, Eastern Meadowlarks (Sturnella magna) and Northern Bobwhites (Colinus virginianus), in an area of recent explosive growth in oil and gas related development. First, we quantified habitat lossand fragmentation of grassland habitat using remotely sensed datasets at multiple...

BWQuailOverallRange is an ESRI SDE Feature Classshowing Overall Range for Bobwhite Quail (Colinus virginianus) in Colorado. Overall Range is defined as that area which encompasses all known seasonal activity within the observed range of a population of Bobwhite Quail.
