This data set represents the 2010 mountain goat seasonal range boundaries for Wyoming. Seasonal range delineations depict lands that are important in each season for certain biological processes within a herd unit. Seasonal range boundaries are based on long-term observation data, specific research projects, and professional judgement. Ranges are digitized at a scale of 1:100,000 using USGS 1:100,000 DRGs as a backdrop for heads up digitizing, and are revised as needed by the Wyoming Game and Fish Department. Current seasonal range definitions are based on a 1990 document drafted by the Wyoming Chapter of The Wildlife Society in cooperation with the Wyoming Game and Fish Department and federal land agencies.

Data was acquired during aerial surveys conducted by Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks (FWP) between 1993 and 2007. The aerial surveys were conducted annually to count and classify mountain in the area. Data are used by Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks (FWP) in their management responsibilities to set hunting seasons, determine population trends, and identify critical habitats. This layer does not include overall distribution or winter range within Tribal lands/Indian Reservations or National Park Service lands. Overall distribution polygons represent general or year round habitat. Winter range polygons represent areas occupied by the species from November 15 to March 1. Not all polygons in this coverage represent overall distribution and/or winter range. The polygon attribute to select overall distribution and/or winter range areas for mountain goat is USE.
This information was derived from the 1:24,000 scale Digital Rastor Graphics (DRG's). Data were digitized on-screen using the Arc/Info module to create a Mountain Goat Hunting Unit polygon coverage. Where available, coincident lines were use from other available data. If these data were available but not at 1:24,000 scale or better, digitizing was done directly from the DRG, with the exception of Hydro Unit (HUC) boundaries, which were pulled from the Division's HUC coverages. Digitizing and attributing were done by the Wildlife GIS Group of the Colorado Division of Wildlife. Label points have multiple attributes and linear features are attributed with the feature name that makes up that portion of the GMU boundary.
