The dataset entitled “imputedsalt_MissS” holds data structures to be relayed to statistical modeling of salinity in near-coastal environments of the Northern Gulf of Mexico. The content therein is created by the ‘covardr2formodel.R’ script that represents terminal decisions on variable setup and transformations. The design ideal is that the content of this directory would be copied to some path of “input” within a model building repository. The table in this directory would be especially suitable for both (1) formal data releases supporting as needed interpretive publications and (2) simultaneous long-term storage as copies within a model building repository in some specific terminal decisions (variable transforms...

The Bonnet Carré Spillway (BCS), located about 28 miles northwest of New Orleans, was constructed by the US Army Corp of Engineers in the early 1930s as part of an integrated flood-control system for the lower Mississippi River (MR). The BCS control structure consists of 350 individual bays that can be opened to divert water from the river to Lake Pontchartrain to relieve pressure on downstream levees. Lake Pontchartrain (LP) is hydrologically connected to the Mississippi Sound (MS Sound) and the Gulf of Mexico and is more accurately characterized as an estuarine embayment. BCS openings have occurred twelve times prior to 2019 because of high Mississippi River stages, typically in late spring. In 2019, the spillway...

The CAGES program (Comparative Assessment of Gulf Estuarine Systems) is designed to examine the differences between estuarine ecosystems and investigate why some are more productive than others. The program focuses on estuarine areas important to commercial fisheries and includes data on commercial finfish and invertebrate species, as well as other species commonly captured in trawl sampling. This Louisiana dataset is a subset of the CAGES Relational Database which is a compilation of fishery-independent data contributed by natural resource agencies of the Gulf States (Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida). This data set includes data from trawls collected by the Alabama Department of Conservation...

This is an ArcGIS shapefile which depicts the seasonal salinity dynamics of 32 Gulf of Mexico estuaries. To characterize the dynamic nature of estuarine salinity gradients, a multivariate methodology (Bulger et al. 1993) was applied to derive five bio-salinity zones in four salinity seasons for 32 Gulf of Mexico estuaries (Christensen et al. 1997). This seasonal salinity zone spatial framework built upon and refined earlier studies which characterized salinity on an annual-averaged basis (NOAA 1985, Orlando et al. 1993, NOAA 2007). Precipitation, flow gage data, and monthly salinity averages were evaluated to determine which months would be used to represent the high, low, and transitional (increasing and decreasing)...

The Bonnet Carré Spillway (BCS), located about 28 miles northwest of New Orleans, Louisiana, was constructed in the early 1930s as part of an integrated flood-control system for the lower Mississippi River Plain. The BCS is designed to divert water from the Mississippi River (MSR) into Lake Pontchartrain (LP), which then flows into Lake Borgne and the Mississippi Sound (MS Sound), thus relieving pressure on levees downstream. Opening of the spillway occurs when measured streamflow in the MSR at New Orleans exceeds approximately 1.25 million cubic feet per second, which normally occurs once a year in late spring. In 2019, for the first time, the spillway opened twice in one year; the first opening occurred between...
This dataset includes barrier island land cover types collected from mid-November 2015 to mid-December 2015 along randomly placed transects at seven sites throughout the east end of Dauphin Island. Specifically, this data collection included characterizing land cover types and measuring horizontal position and elevation. We characterized plant community composition and structure for a subset of these points (see Vegetation Survey Data Table). This work was conducted through a joint effort by the State of Alabama, the U.S. Geological Survey, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to evaluate the feasibility of various restoration alternatives and how specific alternatives might increase the resiliency and sustainability...
