This map was digitized from the geology map of Madagascar (BESAIRIE, 1964). The 96 original categories were reclassified into predominant rock types which seem to have an important effect on the vegetation they support. The categories of sedimentary rocks include sandstones, loose (unconsolidated) sands, and two limestone categories of different ages (one of which produces the spectacular "tsingy" areas of jagged, highly eroded limestone pinnacles). A broad category of metamorphic rocks (including granites and migmatites), often covered by thick layers of laterites, covers large areas of the central and eastern areas of the island. Lavas and basalts, and several restricted rock types including quartzites, marbles...

GTOPO30 is a global digital elevation model (DEM) resulting from a collaborative effort led by the staff at the U.S. Geological Survey's EROS Data Center in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. The name GTOPO30 is derived from the fact that elevations in GTOPO30 are regularly spaced at 30-arc seconds (approximately 1 kilometer). GTOPO30 was developed to meet the needs of the geospatial data user community for regional and continental scale topographic data. This release represents the completion of global coverage of 30-arc second elevation data that have been available from the EROS Data Center beginning in 1993. Several areas have been updated and the entire global data set has been repackaged, so these data supersede...

This geodatabase reflects the U.S. Geological Survey’s (USGS) ongoing commitment to its mission of understanding the nature and distribution of global mineral commodity supply chains by updating and publishing the georeferenced locations of mineral commodity production and processing facilities, mineral exploration and development sites, and mineral commodity exporting ports in Africa. The geodatabase and geospatial data layers serve to create a new geographic information product in the form of a geospatial portable document format (PDF) map. The geodatabase contains data layers from USGS, foreign governmental, and open-source sources as follows: (1) mineral production and processing facilities, (2) mineral exploration...

This map is a simplified version of the vegetation map of FARAMALALA (1988 &1995), which was derived from LANDSAT satellite imagery, and broadly maintained the vegetation zones defined by HUMBERT (1955). The remaining areas of good quality, primary vegetation were identified from this map and was then classified into two major types, one evergreen (eastern and central) and the other deciduous (western and southern). The evergreen forests include the humid forests (at low, medium and high altitudes), along with the sclerophyllous woodland remnants (Uapaca dominated) of central Madagascar. The deciduous formations include the seasonally dry forests of the west and north, and the southern, dry forests and scrublands.

Illegal logging is one of the leading causes of deforestation today. Sadly, tree species indigenous to regions critical to maintaining Earth’s ecological diversity also possess properties (i.e. appearance, aroma, etc.) desirable to humans, which often leads to exploitation. In 1992, due to illegal logging, Brazilian rosewood (Dalbergia nigra) became the first ever tree species to be listed in an appendix of the Convention of International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), which prohibited international trade of the timber or other products from this species between entities which had voluntarily joined CITES. Despite its inclusion in Appendix I of CITES, the species continues to be logged...

This data release presents the Yale stocks and flows database (YSTAFDB). Its data describe the use of 102 materials from the early 1800s to circa 2013 through anthropogenic cycles, their recycling and criticality properties, and on spatial scales ranging from suburbs to global. This data collection was previously scattered across multiple non-uniformly formatted files such as journal papers, reports, and unpublished spreadsheets. These data have been synthesized into YSTAFDB, which is presented as individual comma-separated text files and also in MySQL and PostgreSQL database formats. Consolidation of these data into a single database can increase their accessibility and reusability, which is relevant to diverse...

Remaining Primary Vegetation, classified by the Underlying Geology was produced by overlaying the map of Remaining Primary Vegetation (derived from satellite imagery) on a map of Simplified Geology. This map provides new insights into the patterns of distributions of plant species, and the various types of vegetation, especially in western and southern Madagascar where the geology varies substantially.
