High-resolution digital aerial imagery was collected on August 23 and 24, 2018, with an 80-megapixel Phase One iXU-R 180 natural color aerial camera co-mounted with a Phase One iXU-RS 160 achromatic aerial camera. Software co-registers the simultaneously collected images to create 4-band imagery that can be displayed in either true color (RGB) or color-infrared (CIR) format. The camera system is connected to the plane's positioning and orientation system and precise metadata was generated for each exposure. This imagery was intended to be used as a base layer for object-based image analysis (OBIA) to map aquatic vegetation in western Lake Erie.

This data set, compiled by the USGS Lake Erie Biological Station, provides near-bottom measurements of temperature and dissolved oxygen for the Central Basin of Lake Erie. Data were recorded by self-contained environmental data loggers (PME, Inc., MiniDOT data loggers). The data loggers were deployed to collect data during mid-May 2021 through late October 2021 to better understand how hypoxia develops and influences fish habitat quality during lake stratification. The data loggers were deployed on acoustic telemetry receivers in a network designed to record tagged fish movements (Great Lakes Acoustic Telemetry Observation System, GLATOS). Additional years of data collection are planned, and data release will be...

This project addressed regional climate change effects on aquatic food webs in the Great Lakes. We sought insights by examining Lake Erie as a representative system with a high level of anthropogenic impacts, strong nutrient gradients, seasonal hypoxia, and spatial overlap of cold- and cool-water fish guilds. In Lake Erie and in large embayments throughout the Great Lakes basin, this situation is a concern for fishery managers, as climate change may exacerbate hypoxia and reduce habitat volume for some species. We examined fish community composition, fine-scale distribution, prey availability, diets, and biochemical tracers for dominant fishes from study areas with medium-high nutrient levels (mesotrophic, Fairport...

Hydroacoustic estimates of fish density are used for fisheries management in central Lake Erie. Hydroacoustic data were collected along 10, randomly-selected, 5-kilometer transects and two cross-basin transects between the US and Canadian shorelines in central Lake Erie during July 2021. Software-generated raw variables were used for calculating estimates of hydroacoustic fish densities presented here in tabular form. These data are related to a longer-term data set from 2010-2019, and a data set from 2020.

Trends in nutrient fluxes and streamflow for selected tributaries in the Lake Erie watershed were calculated using monitoring data at 10 locations. Trends in flow-normalized nutrient fluxes were determined by applying a weighted regression approach called WRTDS (Weighted Regression on Time, Discharge, and Season). Site information and streamflow and water-quality records are contained in 3 zipped files named as follows: INFO (site information), Daily (daily streamflow records), and Sample (water-quality records). The INFO, Daily (flow), and Sample files contain the input data, by water-quality parameter and by site as .csv files, used to run trend analyses. These files were generated by the R (version 3.1.2) software...

Chemical composition of fish bones can be used to trace fish migrations and other movements (e.g., use of tributaries for spawning). Chemical composition of water is required to be able to trace fish migrations or movements to particular rivers or streams. Because water chemistry can change over time due to changes in land use, tectonic movements that alter groundwater pathways, pollution, industrial activity, and potentially other sources, periodic re-assessment of water chemistry is required. Here we present data on concentrations of common elements for several tributary streams to Lake Michigan, Lake Erie, and Lake Ontario collected in 2017 and 2018. These data will be useful to anyone desiring to track fish...

The Lake Erie Ecological Investigations (LEEI) dataset contains data collected on contaminants in sediments, benthic invertebrate populations, fish populations and abnormalities, and fish health of primarily brown bullhead in Areas of Concerns (AOCs) on Lake Erie. A subset of the larger dataset, this section specifically handles reference tables, used in database design in order to standardize often used values and to make the data file efficient, for the main tables of the LEEI dataset. The reference tables include: site.csv, site_date.csv, and species.csv.

A fish’s diet is the integrated response of multiple ecological interactions including habitat use, foraging behavior, prey community characteristics, and inter-specific interactions. Fish diet samples have quantified how the invasion of white perch into Lake Erie in the early 1950s has influenced interactions with native yellow perch, which are similar in morphology and habitat use. Early research largely concluded that given the high foraging efficiency of white perch there is both high potential for inter-specific competition and that the invasion of white perch has negatively affected yellow perch. As part of a biannual (spring and autumn) Lake Erie Western Basin Forage Fish Assessment, the USGS Lake Erie Biological...

Large lakes provide a variety of ecological services to surrounding cities and communities. Many of these services are supported by ecological processes that are threatened by the increasing prevalence of cyanobacterial blooms which occur as aquatic ecosystems experience cultural eutrophication. Over the past 10 years, Lake Erie experienced cyanobacterial blooms of increasing severity and frequency, which have resulted in impaired drinking water for the surrounding communities. Cyanobacterial blooms may impact ecological processes that support other services, but many of these impacts have not been documented. Secondary production (production of primary consumers) is an important process that supports economically...

The datasets listed on this page need to have copies of the images and their metadata files stored in .zip files for downloading, as the list of individual files is so long users may not download the metadata at the same time they download images. Do not make public until the image files are replaced with .zip files (which contain both the images and metadata). Water-quality constituents were measured along planned survey lines, which were generally perpendicular to the shoreline and spaced 100 meters apart, over an approximately 2.3-mile section of nearshore Lake Erie on June 10-12, 2019 (survey 1), and August 19-21, 2019 (survey 2), using a YSI 6920 V2 multiparameter sonde towed from the side of a marine survey vessel at about 1-ft depth. Water-quality data collected in this area included near-surface measurements of water temperature, specific conductance, pH, dissolved oxygen, and turbidity. The water-quality data were measured at 5-second intervals and were geo-referenced with a global navigation satellite system (GNSS) smart antenna with submeter accuracy. There...

This vector polygon feature class was developed from the Upper Midwest & Great Lakes Landscape Conservation Cooperative's Coastal Conservation Working Group (CCWG) "Designing the Coastal Wetlands of Tomorrow" September 6th, 2017 stakeholder workshop. The polygon features represent potential areas of coastal wetland opportunities and were derived from paper maps marked up by workshop participants that they believed to be areas of opportunity for coastal wetland protection (maintain and protect current wetlands), restoration (add wetlands or increase size of a wetland), or enhancement (improve the quality of a wetland). The CCWG is particularly interested in these opportunities to partner and provide support for coastal...

The first basin-wide map of large stands of invasive Phragmites australis (common reed) in the coastal zone was created through a collaboration between the U.S. Geological Survey and Michigan Tech Research Institute (Bourgeau-Chavez et al 2013). This data set represents a revised version of that map and was created using multi-temporal PALSAR data and Landsat images from 2016-2017. In addition to Phragmites distribution, the data sets shows several land cover types including urban, agriculture, forest, shrub, emergent wetland, forested wetland, and some based on the dominant plant species (e.g., Schoenoplectus, Typha). The classified map was validated using over 400 field visits. This map covers the eastern portion...

Assessing the distribution and abundance of both predator and prey (forage) fish species is a cornerstone of ecosystem-based based fishery management, and supports decision making that considers food-web interactions. In support of binational Great Lakes fishery management the objectives of this survey were to: provide estimates of densities of key forage and predator species in the western basin of Lake Erie, to assess seasonal and spatial distributions of fishes, and to assess year class strength. A systematic grid sampling approach with 41 stations was sampled during June (Spring) and September (Autumn), starting in 2013. This data release adds 2018 data to the set for a total of six years observation using the...

This Fish Health Evaluation dataset, a conceptual subgroup of the Lake Erie Ecological Investigations (LEEI) dataset, focuses on the health of fish—primarily brown bullhead—sampled at Areas of Concern (AOCs) on Lake Erie, as measured by anomalies, tumors, biomarkers, and other heath indicators. The focus of the data in the Fish Health dataset is from the 1998-2000 study, which reevaluated fish health in comparison to data from various historical studies also in the dataset. All of the data from the 1998-2000 evaluation and the data used for comparison from historical studies are in the main FISH_HEALTH table; additional historical data, which presumably fell out of scope for comparison, is also in the OLDFISHDATA_NOTERIE...
