This report details the inventory of mammals in Lake Clark National Park and Preserve (LACL) between 7 and 31 July 2003 as part of a cooperative effort of the Beringian Coevolution Project at the Museum of Southwestern Biology, University of New Mexico and the Inventory and Monitoring Program of the National Park Service of Alaska. We begin the process of documenting the approximately 36 species of mammals that occur in the Park, with a primary focus on small mammals (i.e., shrews, voles, lemmings, weasels, porcupine, squirrels, and hares). The U.S. Geological Survey and the National Park Service conducted a water-quality investigation of the Crescent River Basin in Lake Clark National Park and Preserve from May 2003 through September 2004. The Crescent River Basin was studied because it has a productive sockeye salmon run that is important to the Cook Inlet commercial fishing industry. Water-quality, biology, and limnology characteristics were assessed. Glacier-fed streams that flow into Crescent Lake transport suspended sediment that is trapped by the lake. The University of Alaska Anchorage, Alaska Natural Heritage Program agreed to conduct a vascular plant survey of the proposed UNAVCO Plate Boundary Observatory GPS monument site at Slope Mountain in Lake Clark National Park and Preserve. The need for a plant survey was precipitated by the discovery of a number of rare plants found on surrounding peaks during vascular plant inventories in 2003 and 2005 (see Carlson et al. 2005 for details). The survey of the UNAVCO site on the northeast peak of Slope Mountain did not reveal any imperiled or critically imperiled vascular plant species.
