The U.S. Geological Survey evaluated 20 years of total phosphorus (P) and total nitrogen (N) concentration data for 18 Lake Champlain tributaries using a new statistical method based on weighted regressions to estimate daily concentration and flux histories based on discharge, season, and trend as explanatory variables. The use of all the streamflow discharge values for a given date in the record, in a process called “flow-normalization”, removed the year-to-year variation due to streamflow and generated a smooth time series from which trends were calculated. Static flood-inundation boundary extents were created for Lake Champlain in Franklin, Chittenden, Addison, Rutland, and Grand Isle Counties in Vermont and Clinton, Essex, and Washington Counties in New York by using recently acquired (2009, 2012, 2014, and 2015) light detection and ranging (lidar) data. The corresponding flood-inundation maps, which can be accessed through the USGS Flood Inundation Mapping Science website at http://water.usgs.gov/osw/flood_inundation/, depict estimates of the areal extent of flooding corresponding to selected water-level elevations (stages) at the USGS lake gage on the Richelieu River (Lake Champlain) at Rouses Point, N.Y. In August 2020, the U.S. Geologic Survey acquired high-precision survey data of first-floor doorway threshold elevations at buildings in the Lake Champlain floodplain in Vermont. For a representative sample of buildings within the 106 feet (National Geodetic Vertical Datum of 1929) stage boundary of the regional flood-inundation map (Flynn and Hayes, 2019), 153 buildings, or nearly 12 percent of the total buildings, were surveyed. Assessment of egg deposition is widely used to provide an index of spawning efforts for lithophilic-spawning fishes. However, little is known about the collection techniques efficacy and bias when collecting fish eggs. We conducted a literature review to assess egg collection methods and evaluate egg retention and capture on egg mats. The literature review provided a summary of different gear types used to collect fish eggs, possible bias from the gears, and egg 'abundance' reporting strategies.

Removal of leaf-litter may help municipalities reduce phosphorus loads. Catch-basin cleaning and street cleaning are two commonly used Best Management Practices that could be modified to remove leaves and qualify for additional load-reduction credits. This Data Release contains four tab-delimited .txt files containing additional information about the study area, characteristics of municipal street solids, and load-reduction estimates from increased catch basin and street cleaning practices that are not available in the associated report. This USGS data release presents tabular data of daily and annual (for the 9-month period March 1 through November 30) estimates of concentrations and fluxes of total and dissolved phosphorus, total nitrogen, chloride, and total suspended solids for 18 monitored tributaries of Lake Champlain. Annual estimates of concentration and flux are presented as 9-month data because the frequency and type of sample data from winter months are inadequate for making meaningful wintertime estimates.
