Album caption: The water in Deer Creek plunges more than 30 meters through a slot cut in the Lower and Middle Cambrian Tapeats Sandstone just before entering the Colorado River, 219.1 kilometers below Lees Ferry. Angular blocks from the cliff face above lie on the banks of the river. The Colorado River flows from right to left. Altitude is 588 meters. 9-10-23. E.C.L. Album caption: Another view of the willow log shown in picture No. 283. It will be noted that the stump end of the log projects upward. When submerged this log must vibrate vigorously, probably in 10 years the limestone boulder will be cut in two. In illustrating the softness of sandstone, some engineers have called attention to the fact that sandstone boulders have been cut in two by soft willow logs. These willow logs will also cut hard limestone or granite boulders. 9-15-23. E.C.L. Index card: Willow log cuts a notch in limestone. Coconino County, Arizona. 1923.
