The purpose of this Traditional Knowledge (TK) research is to document important habitat characteristics of the selected focal fish and wildlife species based on the observations of traditional land users. The information may be used to develop habitat models to show where these specific fish and wildlife habitats occur across the Yukon North Slope. The Traditional Knowledge may also be used to validate other types of habitat mapping or to identify specialized habitats such as movement corridors, denning areas, wintering areas.
Natural resource managers and native communities have expressed a need for effectively synthesizing traditional knowledge and western science data. Often wildlife management plans are based on remotely sensed data and data collected by wildlife biologists. These data may not reflect the variables that are important to the local users, including the scale of information, names describing places or habitats, or how seasonality affects the wildlife available for harvest. The Western Alaska LCC was one of the second tier LCCs to get established (officially started in 2011). With funding from FWS, Western AK LCC staff were hired in 2010 and they held a series of nine (9) meetings in October and November 2010 throughout the western Alaska region to speak with potential partners and solicit input on early directions for the LCC. Meetings were held in Cold Bay, King Salmon, Dillingham, Anchorage, Kodiak, Bethel, Fairbanks, Kotzebue, and Nome. The Yukon North Slope (YNS) has been and remains a core hunting territory of the Inuvialuit of the Canadian Western Arctic. From their communities in Aklavik and Inuvik in the Northwest Territories, the Inuvialuit rely on the Yukon North Slope for their subsistence livelihood. They travel by boat, foot, allterrain vehicle or skidoo to hunt, trap and fish along the coast, foothills and mountains of the Yukon North Slope (YNS). The Inuvialuit Final Agreement (IFA) was legislated in 1984 and confirms the management priority for the YNS is the conservation of the land, waters, wildlife and Inuvialuit traditional use. The Midwest Landscape Initiative (MLI) developed a Regional Species of Greatest Conservation Need (RSGCN) List to provide an effective, collaborative focus and approach for regional wildlife diversity conservation in the Midwest. The Midwest RSGCN effort applied a process initiated in the Northeast, advanced in the Southeast, and refined by the MLI At-Risk Species Working Group, to identify RSGCN for the Midwest. The Midwest RSGCN process evaluated 1,817 SGCN across 13 taxonomic groups and selected 340 as RSGCN. Based on discussions with the Grassland Decision Support Tool Technical Review Team, NatureServe,and MoRAP regarding combining efforts for an expanded project to address grassland conservation within the Gulf Coast Prairie LCC, we propose 5 tasks. The effort will utilize the expertise of Nature Serve to facilitate, coordinate and communicate the efforts with stakeholders, and MoRAP to focus on the technical elements of the products identified by partners including data development and analysis. BioMap Alaska is a citizen science observation and information management tool. BioMap Alaska engages residents of coastal communities to voluntarily report observations and local knowledge of marine life. This project is intended to improve and expand upon science based monitoring activities, and to further cooperation and collaboration among local people, researchers, and resource managers. We provide a field guide of “species of interest” on which we are seeking information and web-based data logging so that that observers can enter their observations and view these on an online map.
