The purpose of this volume is to create a resource for regional land and resource managers and researchers by synthesizing the latest research on the 1) historical/current status of landscape-scale drivers and ecosystem processes, including anthropogenic activities, 2) future projected changes of each, and 3) the impacts of changes on important resources. The individual sections can be informative alone, but when combined we can see a holistic picture of the drivers of landscape change in our region. The sections are short but contain a wealth of information and resources for more in-depth knowledge, and they highlight key findings and key information gaps so the most important information is easy to find and digest....

The circumboreal vegetation mapping (CBVM) project is an international collaboration among vegetation scientists to create a new vegetation map of the boreal region at a 1:7.5 million scale with a common legend and mapping protocol (Talbot and Meades 2011). The map is intended to portray potential natural vegetation, or the vegetation that would exist in the absence of human or natural disturbance, rather than existing vegetation that is commonly generated at larger scales. This report and map contributes to the CBVM effort by developing maps of bioclimatic zones, geographic sectors with similar floristic variability, and vegetation in boreal Alaska, Yukon, northwestern British Columbia, and a mountainous portion...

We have developed autonomous and high precision sensor arrays to monitor growth of individual native plants along with local environmental conditions, coupled with wireless data loggers that can provide real-time data available to managers and the wider public. We deployed an experimental set of these sensors, integrated with a weather station, 2 webcams, and a live web portal (construction in progress) to showcase how this real time information can be useful to relevant managers while also raising awareness of the challenges of climate change adaptation and Hawaiian plant conservation in general. With the increasing popularity of wildlife web-cams, it has been shown that this type of technology has a strong ability...

In June 2015, the Eastern Tallgrass Prairie and Big Rivers Landscape Conservation Cooperative (LCC) of the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service (USFWS) granted $80,000 to the City of St. Louis (City) to promote urban monarch conservation by expanding activities associated with Milkweeds for Monarchs: The St. Louis Butterfly Project (M4M). Generally speaking, the USFWS grant was to: (1) enhance urban education and outreach efforts, and (2) conduct research on urban monarch habitat. The project spent $51,583.57 on activities for ed and $27,785.68 for research. The City’s Office of the Mayor used a portion of the funds to contract a part time individual to act as a Monarch Community Liaison, and used the majority of the grant...

The University of Alaska Anchorage supported the development of a bibliography of natural and cultural resource information important the Northwest Boreal Region. This tool provides the ability to search a vast, curated database for the Northwest Boreal region in one place. Users can explore thousands of curated scholarly articles, state and federal resource reports, land management plans, and unique transboundary datasets. Each entry includes geographic information about the area of study, allowing users to draw a box on a map to narrow searches to information directly related to a specific region in Alaska, the Yukon, British Columbia, and Northwest Territories. Potential users include land and resource managers,...
In Alaska, changes in snow, ice, and weather, have resulted in risks to human lives, infrastructure damage, threats to valuable natural resources, and disruption of hunting, fishing, and livelihoods.Leaders from the Aleutians to the Chukchi Sea came together for a series of Coastal Resilience and Adaptation Workshops, spearheaded by three Landscape Conservation Cooperatives and the Aleutian Pribilof Islands Association. Tribal leaders, resource managers, community planners, and scientists explored strategies to adapt to these unprecedented changes. The workshop series brought together 14 Organizing Partners 34 Tribes, 15 State & Federal Agencies, and a total of more than 200 participants to meet in four regional...

The primary objective of this project is to bring together Hawaii’s climate change scientists, Molokai’s traditional fishpond managers, and other natural resource managers to share scientific and cultural knowledge and work together as a team to identify adaptive management strategies for two of Molokai’s ancient fishponds. We will accomplish this through a short series of workshops. A secondary objective is to form new and strengthen existing partnerships so we can pool resources and better respond to climate change as an island. We will incorporate workshop results into our strategic plan for the ponds and upland areas, revise our K-6 educational curriculum, create a climate change video featuring Moloka’i kupuna,...

The Alaska ShoreZone program has been able to document Arctic coastal biologyand dynamic processes through high resolution aerial imagery, videography, andground assessments: a snapshot in time of the ever changing Arctic coast. Some ofthe most spectacular of these images have been collected in this volume, CoastalImpressions: A Photographic Journey along Alaska’s Arctic Coast. Glance throughthese pages, study and ponder over them , then close your eyes and imagine.Wipe away your preconceived notions of the Arctic and learn about the gem thatis the true Arctic coast.
Activity 1. Quantify viability of corridors using temporal sampling: past, present, future. As large-scale wind patterns change, the viability of flyways in the Pacific hemisphere is likely to change. This project will evaluate the tail/headwind components for flight routes from Alaska to sites in the South Pacific (documented godwit and curlew flight tracks) by sampling 50-year timeslices to determine whether the present climatology is more or less favorable than the past (paleoclimate) periods or the projected future (late 21st century). The project will determine whether other flight corridors may have been more advantageous in the past or future than during the present period.Activity 2. Assessment of optimization...

The Northwest Boreal Landscape Conservation Cooperative (NWB LCC) is a partnership between agencies involved in land management across Alaska, Yukon, Northwest Territories, and British Columbia. The NWB LCC aims to coordinate science and support to decision makers for improving land management decisions. Knowledge gaps have been identified by the NWB LCC and are beginning to be filled. One of the priority information gaps is knowledge of the anthropogenic footprint currently on the landscape. The anthropogenic footprint is all the disturbance types made by various human activities, usually through some form of industrial development. Examples include roads, power lines, pipelines, and clear cuts among many others....

The Monarch’s View of a City project will lay the groundwork for design principles to guide the development, testing and deployment of future urban conservation for the Monarch butterfly across the Eastern half of the country. This strategy will need to reflect an integrated and interdisciplinary approach, one that includes ecological and social dimensions specific to an urban landscape. Pilot design projects at various scales in at least two cities will advance the state of science for developing landscape conservation design (LCD) guidelines for monarch butterfly conservation in urban areas as described below. While the ETPBR LCC, working through US Fish & Wildlife Service staff, will select cities and manage...

We propose using an existing, longterm data set of sea urchin production, sea otter performance, and ecosystem state metrics from the last 30 years tobuild a spatially explicit sea otter population viability analysis (PVA) model, incorporating climate change effects. We propose a 3-pronged approach in year 1 of this project to evaluate (obj. 1) variability in sea urchin demographics over space and time to identify scaledependent patterns of variation in production using existing datasets, (obj. 2) define the direct effects of climate change and ocean acidification on sea urchin productivity through indepth literature review and contributions from experiments by collaborators, and (obj. 3) determine how effects of...
