Practitioners struggle with how to identify, prioritize, and implement climate adaptation actions that can effectively reduce vulnerability; these decisions may be more easily made and successfully implemented if they are informed by scientific evidence. EcoAdapt, the Institute for Natural Resources, and the Northwest Climate Science Center have partnered on the Available Science Assessment Project (ASAP) to synthesize and evaluate scientific knowledge on specific adaptation actions to determine the implementation conditions under which these actions may be most effective; we are examining the science behind sea level rise adaptation actions in the Northwest. We will convene managers and scientists at in-person...

Basal area is a measure of the cross-sectional area of trees calculated by multiplying the foresters’ constant (0.005454) by the squared diameter of each tree to determine a measure of tree area (ft2 or m2) per unit area (acre or ha). Similar to an assessment of forest canopy cover, basal area provides a measure of horizontal structure, and is closely associated with measures of vertical structure. When assessing condition of upland hardwood woodland and forest systems, the GCPO LCC Integrated Science Agenda targets a large proportion of the basal area in those systems to be composed of oak and hickory species. This endpoint targets >90% of basal area as oak and hickory for upland hardwood woodland systems and >70%...

EARTH SCIENCE,
The purpose of this data set is support resource allocation decisions (i.e. where to invest conservation effort) within the Gulf Coastal Plains and Ozarks Landscape Conservation Cooperative. The Management Opportunity action map for the Open Pine habitat system ranks pixels (250-m) for 3 general classes of conservation actions. Maintenance pixels (values 7-9) are currently estimated to meet the site condition Endpoints in the GCPO LCC’s draft Integrated Science Agenda (v4). Enhancement pixels (values 4-6) are those that are currently classified as Open Pine but do not meet the site condition Endpoints in the Science Agenda. Restoration pixels (values 1-3) are those that are currently in a different land use but...
This research project will identify effective landowner engagement strategies and incentives to sustain ecosystem services (e.g., clean water, biodiversity, wildlife habitat, recreation, aesthetics) in the Southeastern United States through a focused case in three major habitat types (bottomland hardwoods, open pine stands, and grasslands) within the Gulf Coastal Plains and Ozarks region. A geospatial analysis will be used to quantify program participation and expected costs for selected landowner engagement scenarios and program delivery options.

This project is part of an ongoing effort to develop and implement a landscape level decision support system (DSS) across the boundaries of Idaho, Washington, Oregon, and Montana. The project will strengthen public understanding in the use of objective and scientific fish and wildlife data and predictive modeling for purposes of developing geospatially-based landscape science to inform conservation and development actions. The project will inform, educate, and garner public and user support of the DSS upon its public release, aid in the development and use of the DSS web interface based on customer input and preferences, and provide communications strategies, tools, messages, forums, and feedback for improving public...

Northern Arizona University will study how forest treatment practices and climate change may impact water balance across the Kaibab Plateau and critical habitats in lower elevations of the Grand Canyon. The project will include use of a forest landscape simulation model to examine how fuel treatments and prescribed burning will affect the resilience of forest ecosystems. The project will also address whether those activities would benefit the conservation of downstream riparian habitat by mitigating anticipated changes in the stream flow and water quality. The model will assist managers in developing, adaptation strategies for the conservation of riparian habitats by testing a range of realistic fuel treatment and...

In conservation, one challenge of climate change adaptation is that acting on projected long-term climatic threats requires two ‘leaps’ by managers: 1) Acting on climate-based information which rarely is considered by managers; and 2) Acting on projected impacts that have not yet materialized. A broader challenge to Hawaiian plant conservation is the disconnect between the public and the wao akua where efforts to preserve native plants are often concentrated in. We have recently developed autonomous and high precision sensor arrays to monitor growth of individual native plants along with local environmental conditions at 30 minute intervals. The developed sensor array is unobtrusive, autonomous and when coupled...

Interested public,
Conservation efforts in isolated archipelagos such as Hawai’i often focus on habitat-based conservation and restoration efforts that benefit multiple species. Unfortunately, identifying locations where such efforts are safer from climatic shifts is still challenging. We aimed to provide a method to approximate these potential habitat shifts for similar data- and research-limited contexts. We modeled the relationship between climate and the potential distribution of native biomes across the Hawaiian archipelago to provide a first approximation of potential native biome shifts under end-of-century projected climate. Our correlative model circumvents the lack of data necessary for the parameterization of mechanistic...

This dataset was developed as part of a long-term project monitoring the ecological health of the Crown of the Continent Ecosystem (CCE). This effort is a collaborative project between National Park Service Rocky Mountain Inventory and Monitoring Network (ROMN) (Landscape Dynamics Vital Sign), Crown Managers Partnership, Ecological Health Subcommittee (CMP EH) (Landscapes Indicator), and University of Calgary, Geography Department. Purpose and goals of the Crown Manager's Partnership and the Rocky Mountain Network Vital Signs monitoring programs are available at the respective websites. The purpose of our collaborative effort is to share knowledge and resources on the various GIS and ecological monitoring data available...
FY2014Avoiding cheatgrass dominance following tree-reduction treatments on woodland-encroached sagebrush communities is a priority for managers in the Great Basin. Perennial herbaceous and weedy annual cover have been related to site resilience after treatment and associated with soil climate regimes and site physical characteristics. Additional investigation of site characteristics associated with vegetation response will allow us to better decide which sites to treat and whether seeding is needed or not in conjunction with tree reduction treatments. Site-level planning also requires an understanding of how climate change may influence vegetation response to treatments. We propose to associate site-measured soil...
