The Arctic National wildlife Refuge (ANWR) , located on the Alaska North Slope, is believed to contain high petroleum production potential. This region also has outstanding wildlife and wilderness values. Currently ANWR is closed to oil and gas leasing. However, Congress is considering an Interior Department recommendation to open a portion of ANWR to oil and gas production. Environmentalists maintain that petroleum exploration and development will have severe environmental effects on the calving activities of one of the largest caribou herds in the Arctic, negative impacts on the peregrine falcon, lesser snow goose, and muskox populations, as well as other detrimental environmental consequences. A draft study by...
Tidal energy has the technical potential to form part of a low carbon electricity sector, however, its ‘social potential’ is less clear, as few empirical studies of public beliefs and responses have been conducted to date. This research addressed this gap by investigating a tidal energy convertor in Northern Ireland, said to be the first grid-connected device of its kind in the world. Data was collected from 313 residents of two nearby villages using mixed methods, guided by a conceptual framework that avoided ‘NIMBY’ assumptions and instead drew on place theory. Findings indicated strong support for the project, arising from beliefs that the project enhanced local distinctiveness by ‘putting the area on the map...

LiDAR scans were taken using a tripod mounted Riegl VZ-400 scanning LiDAR. The tripod was set up such that the scanner was between 1.5 and 2.5 m tall. The VZ-400 is a near infrared (1550 nm) scanner. Geometric control was achieved using a pair of Trimble RB GPS antennae, one mounted on the LiDAR scanner (rover) and the other setup as a base station. Before taking a LiDAR scan, the VZ-400 would use the GPSs to fix a real time kinematic (RTK) solution for the scanner’s location and then use that position (scan position) as a reference for LiDAR returns. Post processing was done using RIScan-Pro version 2 (scanner specific software). Also, in post-processing, overlapping areas of point clouds were merged and inaccuracies...

GTOPO30 is a global digital elevation model (DEM) resulting from a collaborative effort led by the staff at the U.S. Geological Survey's EROS Data Center in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. The name GTOPO30 is derived from the fact that elevations in GTOPO30 are regularly spaced at 30-arc seconds (approximately 1 kilometer). GTOPO30 was developed to meet the needs of the geospatial data user community for regional and continental scale topographic data. This release represents the completion of global coverage of 30-arc second elevation data that have been available from the EROS Data Center beginning in 1993. Several areas have been updated and the entire global data set has been repackaged, so these data supersede...

From 2010-2018 we investigated the occurrence of avian influenza virus in wild birds in Iceland. A total of 6635 swabs samples were collected from wild birds or fecal material directly associated with wild birds. We screened all samples by a real time - polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) test with 381 testing positive. Further testing of all RT-PCR positive samples and all negative samples collected in 2012 by virus isolation yielded 120 positives, with 92 of those testing positive by RT-PCR for avian influenza virus.

The Sea Surface Temperature (SST) data of the Arctic show temperature ranges in degrees C using points whose locations correspond to the centroids of AVHRR Pathfinder version 5 monthly, global, 4 km data set (PFSST V50). The pathfinder rasters are available from the NOAA National Oceanographic Data Center (NODC) and from the Physical Oceanography Distributed Active Archive Center (PO.DAAC), hosted by NASA JPL. Furthermore, each point in the SST dataset is categorized by the ecoregion in which it is located. This classification is based on the Marine Ecosystems Of the World (MEOW) developed and distributed by The Nature Conservancy. These data have been QA'd in that we have selected only data values with associated...

This data collection includes ground-penetrating radar (GPR) data and related observations collected from the NASA Goddard Instrument Field Team (GIFT) Expedition to the Icelandic Highlands in July-August 2019 and August 2021. This dataset includes observations at the Askja Volcano and caldera and Vikrahraun lava flow. GPR data were collected using Geophysical Survey Systems, Inc (GSSI) shielded bistatic antennas at center frequencies of 200 MHz, 400 MHz, and 900 MHz. Common offset surveys were conducted to investigate the subsurface interfaces. The GPR data includes raw data obtained from the instrument (as GSSI .dzt files), line shapefiles of survey locations, and interpreted ice thickness GeoPackage files with...

This data release presents the Yale stocks and flows database (YSTAFDB). Its data describe the use of 102 materials from the early 1800s to circa 2013 through anthropogenic cycles, their recycling and criticality properties, and on spatial scales ranging from suburbs to global. This data collection was previously scattered across multiple non-uniformly formatted files such as journal papers, reports, and unpublished spreadsheets. These data have been synthesized into YSTAFDB, which is presented as individual comma-separated text files and also in MySQL and PostgreSQL database formats. Consolidation of these data into a single database can increase their accessibility and reusability, which is relevant to diverse...
