This data release includes four sets of gridded annual net infiltration (groundwater recharge) and irrigation water use data sets for the Mississippi Embayment Regional Aquifer System (MERAS).Also included are gridded water balance component data sets of precipitation, runoff, actual evapotranspiration, and soil-water storage for 2000 to 2018. The net infiltration, irrigation, runoff, actual evapotranspiration, and soil-water storage data sets are outputs from simulations done with the USGS Soil-Water-Balance (SWB) model (version 2; Westenbroek and others, 2018). The precipitation data was used as input for the SWB model application and is derived from DayMet version 3 (Thornton and others, 2018) and Livneh and...

This dataset comprises SWB model results from runs using projected climate data, summarized by water year, and there are 4 separate datafiles associated with this Data Release: 1. SWB model results for actual evapotranspiration (AET), summarized by water year from 1951 through 2099 2. SWB model results for potential evapotranspiration (PET), summarized by water year from 1951 through...

This data release contains the output from a Soil-Water-Balance (SWB) model (Westenbroek and others, 2010), used to estimate potential recharge to the Long Island regional aquifer system from 1900-2019. Output data for two SWB simulations are included. The first simulation uses available land-use/land-cover datasets to estimate recharge with changing land use from 1900-2019 (referred to as the post-development simulation). The second simulation assumed a forested, undeveloped (predevelopment simulation) condition across Long Island for the same period. The same soil coverages and time-series climate data were used throughout both simulations. Potential recharge was spatially distributed as gridded output across...

This set of data includes four potential annual recharge grids for the State of Maine that were simulated using the Maine Soil-Water-Balance model for 1991 through 2015. The files include a grid representing the uncertainty in the potential recharge and a grid showing the annual average precipitation from the climate dataset that the simulation is based on. A 25-year simulation of potential recharge to groundwater from the Maine Soil-Water-Balance model for the years 1991 to 2015 produced annual results from which the four potential recharge grids were derived. The four are: 25-year mean, median, maximum, and minimum simulated annual potential. A data exclusion zone (see Scientific Investigations Report 2019-5125)...

These data were released prior to the October 1, 2016 effective date for the USGS’s policy dictating the review, approval, and release of scientific data as referenced in USGS Survey Manual Chapter 502.8 Fundamental Science Practices: Review and Approval of Scientific Data for Release. awc_UCRB_Daymet_resolution.txt is an Esri ASCII grid representing the available water capacity (AWC) for the Upper Colorado River Basin. AWC (available water capacity) is the amount of water that a soil can hold, and is between a soil’s field capacity and the wilting point. In Soil-Water Balance (SWB) model recharge simulations, AWC is multiplied by root zone depth to define the maximum water capacity of a cell, and any soil-moisture...

In cooperation with the San Antonio Water System, continuous and discrete water-quality data were collected from groundwater wells completed in the Edwards aquifer, Texas, 2014-2015. Discrete measurements of nitrate were made by using a nitrate sensor. Precipitation data from two sites in the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Global Historical Climatology Network are included in the dataset. The continuous monitoring data were collected using water quality sensors and include hourly measurements of nitrate, specific conductance, and water level in two wells. Discrete measurements of nitrate, specific conductance, and vertical flow rate were collected from one well site at different depths throughout...

The HSG for an area is determined by the least water-transmitting layer in the soil column. The Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) classifies four HSGs from Group A (high infiltration capacity and low overland flow potential) to Group D (low infiltration capacity and high overland flow potential)....

The shapefile associated with this metadata file represents the spatial distribution of mean annual water-budget components, in inches, for Hawaii Island, Hawaii. The water-budget components in the shapefile were computed by a water-budget model for a scenario representative of recent conditions (1916-83 rainfall and 2008 land cover), as described in USGS Scientific Investigations Report (SIR) 2011-5078 and summarized in USGS SIR 2015-5164. The model was developed for estimating groundwater recharge and other water-budget components for each subarea of the model. The model-subarea dataset, consisting of 467,805 subareas (polygons), was generated using Esri ArcGIS software by intersecting (merging) multiple spatial...

These data are derived from the Basin Characterization Model (BCM) and used as input to a total dissolved solids SPARROW model for the Upper Colorado River Basin. The BCM mechanistically models the pathways of precipitation into evapotranspiration, infiltration into soils, runoff, or percolation below the root zone to recharge groundwater (Flint and others, 2013). The dataset is composed of twelve, 270-meter resolution raster layers representing mean total annual values for water years 1985 - 2012 of actual evapotranspiration (aet), climatic water deficit (cwd), excess water (exc), snowmelt (mlt), snowpack (pck), potential evapotranspiration (pet), precipitation (ppt), recharge (rch), runoff (run), sublimation (sbl),...

Problem - The Town of Caroline needs geohydrologic data in two major valley-fill aquifers within the town in order for planners to develop a strategy to manage and protect their water resources. Interest in the interaction between ground water and surface water has increased in recent years as a result of widespread concerns related to water supply. The need to better understand how the development of one water resource affects another will increase as development in Tompkins County intensifies. Upper Sixmile Creek/West Branch Owego Creeks valleys and Lower Sixmile Creek/Willseyville Creek valleys in the Town of Caroline were selected to be studied because they are undergoing increasing development; and most people...

The model was developed for estimating groundwater recharge and other water-budget components for each subarea of the model. These data were released prior to the October 1, 2016 effective date for the USGS’s policy dictating the review, approval, and release of scientific data as referenced in USGS Survey Manual Chapter 502.8 Fundamental Science Practices: Review and Approval of Scientific Data for Release. This data set consists of digital polygons of a constant recharge value for the alluvial and terrace deposits along the North Canadian River from Canton Lake to Lake Overholser in central Oklahoma. Ground water in approximately 400 square miles of Quaternary-age alluvial and terrace aquifer is an important source of water for irrigation, industrial, municipal, stock, and domestic supplies. The aquifer consists of clay, silt, sand,...

Background: The New York State Departments of Environmental Conservation (NYS DEC) and Health (NYS DOH) are concerned about groundwater contamination in the carbonate-bedrock aquifers in New York, especially relating to the unintended introduction of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and liquid manure to these aquifers. These carbonate rocks form extensive aquifers that transmit, and can yield, water from solution-enlarged fractures, bedding planes, and other openings (Olcott, 1995). Groundwater contamination from liquid manure application (fecal coliform bacteria [E. coli] and nitrate) has been on the increase over the past decade as these incidents have been reported to the NYS DEC. Nitrate is highly water-soluble...
