This polygon feature class represents vegetation communities mapped at Fossil Butte National Monument. The polygons were generated using guidelines set by the Standardized National Vegetation Classification System (October 1995). Polygons were generated using machine learning, as well as on screen digitizing of vegetation map types using 2004 imagery flown for the vegetation mapping project. Additional data layers were used in aiding the interpretation, such as slope, hydrology, geography, and ground-collected vegetation information. The attributed vegetation classes were subjected to an accuracy assessment, following which final adjustments were made to the vegetation classes. As with any digital layer, this layer...
The pygmy rabbit (Brachylagus idahoensis) is the smallest leporid in North America and is endemic to sagebrush-steppe habitats of the Great Basin (Jansen 1946; Green and Flinders 1980). Brachylagus idahoensis is an extreme habitat specialist that relies exclusively on big sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata) for food and for protection from predators and thermal extremes; it is also the only native rabbit species that constructs extensive burrow systems (Green and Flinders 1980; Katzner 1994). Because of their dependence on this vegetation type, populations of B. idahoensis are vulnerable to habitat fragmentation, overgrazing, and sagebrush eradication (Holecheck 1981; Dobler and Dixon 1990). Although knowledge of B....

Between 2005 and 2010, 61 adult female elk were trapped using a baited corral trap on Fossil Butte National Monument during winter. An additional 12 female elk were darted from a helicopter during the winter of 2007 near Cokeville, WY, located approximately 20 km northwest of the Monument. We affixed all elk with GPS collars programmed to collect location data every 5 hours. In total we collected 209,250 locations over the study period for ~141 elk years of data.
