Two unique datasets were gathered to document whether flow management for hydropower affects the abundance and diversity of aquatic insect assemblages. The first dataset was collected in Grand Canyon from 2012-2014 by citizen scientists rafting the Colorado River. Simple light traps were set out each night in camp and used to capture the adult life stages of aquatic insects that emerged from the Colorado River. Three aquatic insect taxa were captured in sufficient abundance to analyze statistically including midges (order Diptera, family Chironomidae), micro-caddisflies (order Trichoptera, family Hydroptilidae), and blackflies (order Diptera, family Simuliidae, principally Simulium arcticum). These data were used...
The intense demand for river water in arid regions is resulting in widespread changes in riparian vegetation. We present a direct gradient method to predict the vegetation change resulting from a proposed upstream dam or diversion. Our method begins with the definition of vegetative cover types, based on a census of the existing vegetation in a set of 1 x 2 m plots. A hydraulic model determines the discharge necessary to inundate each plot. We use the hydrologic record, as defined by a flow duration curve, to determine the inundation duration for each plot. This allows us to position cover types along a gradient of inundation duration. A change in river management results in a new flow duration curve, which is used...

This dataset provides compiled and computed data from 1900 through 2017 associated with streamflow statistics used to perform regional analyses for the Brazos, Colorado, Big Cypress, Guadalupe, Neches, Sulphur, and Trinity River Basins. These seven river basins are mostly within Texas, but parts of some of the basins extend into New Mexico and Louisiana. Because changes in precipitation, temperature and groundwater levels can appreciably affect streamflow, understanding changes in streamflow requires taking these forcing variables into account. Long-term streamflow statistics for these seven river basins were derived by analyzing streamflow data and other observed climatological variables. Data include tables of...
This ArcGIS shapefile shows the known locations of beaver activity (including beaver chews, lodges, and dams) in the Tualatin Basin. USGS was intending to collect information about the locations of beaver dams. Often, the GPS coordinates of dams were not known, but the beaver-affected areas were known. The information about locations with beaver activity was generated by multiple local agencies, groups, and organizations. The local sources had identified the beaver activity locations between 2013 and 2016. USGS worked with these local sources to combine all data into one inventory.

The bathymetry (bottom elevation) of the downstream lock approach and lock chamber of Peoria Lock, near Peoria, Illinois, was surveyed on September 19, 2019. The data were collected using a multibeam echo-sounder mapping system (MBMS) with integrated inertial navigation solution (INS) mounted on a manned survey vessel. The raw data were processed and gridded to 0.5 meter using elevation values computed from the Combined Uncertainty and Bathymetry Estimator (CUBE) method, which provides an estimate of the bathymetric elevation and the total propagated uncertainty (TPU) at each gridded location. The 0.5 meter grid was oriented at 39.32 degrees to north to be aligned with the Peoria lock chamber. The bathymetry and...
Surface electrical resistivity tomography (ERT), electromagnetic induction (EMI), and self-potential (SP) data were acquired March 9 - 20, 2018 by the U.S. Geological Survey, in collaboration with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, at the Jim Woodruff Lock and Dam near Chattahoochee, Florida. Eleven ERT profiles were acquired along the right (west) abutment, and immediately downstream, of the concrete, fixed-crest spillway located west of the lock to map geologic structure at depths up to 50 meters (m) using the Advanced Geosciences, Inc. SuperSting R8 resistivity meter. This data release includes the raw and processed resistivity data as well as inverted resistivity models. All are provided as digital data, and...

The Middle Fork Willamette River basin encompasses 3,548 square kilometers of western Oregon and drains to the mainstem Willamette River. Fall Creek basin encompasses 653 square kilometers and drains to the Middle Fork Willamette River. In cooperation with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the U.S. Geological Survey evaluated geomorphic responses of downstream river corridors to annual drawdowns to streambed at Fall Creek Lake. This study of geomorphic change is focused on the major alluvial channel segments downstream of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ dams on Fall Creek and the Middle Fork Willamette River, as well as the 736 hectare Fall Creek Lake. Reservoir erosion during streambed drawdown results in sediment...

USGS met with 13 local groups and organizations around the Portland, Oregon region to collect information regarding the locations of beaver dams in the Tualatin Basin. The local sources had identified beaver dams between 2011 and 2019, and data were compiled by USGS into an ArcGIS shapefile. Often, the local groups did not know the GPS coordinates of beaver dams, but they had identified beaver-affected reaches during that same time period. Therefore, a second shapefile was created to include the locations of beaver activity (including beaver chews, lodges, and dams) in the Tualatin Basin. The Beaver Dam Locations ArcGIS shapefile shows the known locations of beaver dams in the Tualatin Basin. The Beaver Activity...

This data release includes the raw and processed self-potential data. They are provided as digital data, and data fields are defined in the data dictionary. Jim Woodruff Lock and Dam is located...

The benefits of gradually removing a dam (through multiple notches) are to reduce the total project cost and reduce possible environmental effects by allowing the impounded sediment to slowly move downstream, and a stable stream and revegetated floodplain to form upstream. Notching, in this study of a dam on Brewster Creek, near St. Charles, Illinois, involves cutting a given height (in five 12–18 inch notches over approximately a 9 month period) across the length (or some portion of the length) of the dam. Brewster Creek is a tributary of the Fox River in northeastern, Illinois. Sediment, dissolved oxygen, and geomorphic response are being monitored before, during, and after a gradual (notching) removal of the...
