The Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) is the Federal standard for geographic nomenclature. In late 1996, the Dept of Conservation (DOC) surveyed state and federal agencies about the county boundary coverage they used. As a result, DOC adopted the 1:24,000 (24K) scale U.S. Bureau of Reclamation (USBR) dataset (USGS source) for their Farmland Mapping and Monitoring Program (FMMP) but with several modifications. Detailed documentation of these changes is provided by FMMP and included in the lineage section of the metadata. Montana Boundaries Map Service includes the following boundaries: State, County, Incorporated City/Town, Reservation, School Districts, Tax Increment Financing Districts, and Fire Districts. These are available in both a solid & a hollow fill. These boundaries were collected using a federated approach and using the best source documentation available.

This metadata record describes a computed ratio of county acres of farmland reported in agricultural conservation programs to the total acres of farmland reported for the county. Acres in conservation programs are for the 2012 time period, and reported by survey from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Farm Field Survey. Acres of total farmland were used from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, 2012 Census of Agriculture. The ratio is intended to provide an indication of the intensity of agricultural management practices.
The 'PLSFILL' layer is a polygon coverage depicting the township, range and sections contained in the Public Land Survey System grid for the State of California. Townships are roughly six miles square, and are numbered north and south from an established baseline. Likewise, ranges are numbered east and west from an established meridian. California uses three baseline/meridians, these being Humboldt, Mt. Diablo, and San Bernardino, abbreviated H, M, and S. Meridian, township, range, and section values are combined in the redefined item MTRS to facilitate relates from/to other tables. This layer has been clipped to a 12 km buffer of the Tehachapi study area.
