The Gulf Coastal Plains and Ozarks Landscape Conservation Cooperative Geomatics Working Group developed an on-line platform to serve geospatial data in a consistent manner that also allows end-users to easily discover, access, and integrate existing data and tools without dedicated GIS software or expertise.
Despite the existence of high quality scientific information, there are significant barriers to the application of available tools to real-world decisions regarding how to best restore and manage coastal wetlands in consideration of climate change effects. These barriers derive from the difficulty in determining the most appropriate restoration or management prescription in light of site-specific habitat conditions, constraints, and expected future conditions. Wetlands along the southern California coast vary widely in terms of their size, habitat composition, and forcing functions. For example, the balance between fluvial and littoral processes can affect the size, extent, and frequency of tidal inlet closures....
This project built off a first phase of work funded by Northeast states through the Regional Conservation Needs program by assessing the vulnerability to climate change of 7-10 additional northeastern habitat types, including forests, wetlands, and aquatic systems. Tidally-influenced habitat vulnerability was also assessed and included development of a database of ongoing coastal climate change projects and tools.The project will also build capacity in the Northeastern states for Regional Vulnerability Assessments and will coordinate with NOAA in the development of an on-line catalog of coastal climate change assessments.
The Gulf of Mexico is estimated to contain nearly half of all U.S. salt marsh systems, which are rapidly disappearing within the Gulf States. Salt marshes are complex, dynamic, and transitional systems that provide habitat for a myriad of wildlife species, filtration that supports water quality, and natural barriers that contribute to the security of inland coastal areas. Average tree diameter (dbh) is also an important forest condition for some species requiring large trees and subsequent tree cavities for denning/nesting/roosting sites. The GCPO LCC ISA targets diameter of upland hardwood forest and woodland trees to be ≥14” dbh. Basal area is a measure of the cross-sectional area of trees calculated by multiplying the foresters’ constant (0.005454) by the squared diameter of each tree to determine a measure of tree area (ft2 or m2) per unit area (acre or ha). Similar to an assessment of forest canopy cover, basal area provides a measure of horizontal structure, and is closely associated with measures of vertical structure. The Highstead Foundation worked with partners to deliver, disseminate, and communicate North Atlantic LCC science products to help advance the knowledge base, strategic conservation planning, and on-the-ground conservation success of regional conservation partnerships (RCPs). There are 39 RCPs in New England (and eastern New York) covering more than 60 percent of the landscape, working across town and even state boundaries to achieve conservation that is both locally grounded and regionally significant. Dozens of species of landbirds, such as warblers, hummingbirds, and orioles, migrate through the Northeastern United States from their summer breeding grounds in the U.S. and Canada to their nonbreeding grounds as far south as South America. During the migration period, birds must find habitat where they can stop, rest and replenish their energy reserves. This dataset represents results from this study attributed to the NHDPlus V2 catchments. Changes in climate occurring throughout the Mississippi River Basin are expected to lead to additional impacts in stream habitats and fish assemblages in multiple ways, including changing changing thermal properties and flow regimes. This dataset represents vegetation communities, river channel and bare areas (often sand bars) mapped along the Colorado River bottomland in Utah, as of September 2010. Dominant cover types were classified as 'open flight', based on height, and potential interference with bat flights over water sources. Traditional image interpretation cues were used to develop the polygons, such as shape, size, pattern, tone, texture, color, and shadow, from high resolution, true color, aerial imagery (0.3m resolution), acquired for the project. Prioritization for protection of habitat (via acquisition or easements), based on local scale ecological integrity, degree of threats faced, potential conservation opportunities, and conservation value of surrounding landscape.
