Collection of 4 assessments for Upland Streams and Rivers. The Condition Index ranks stream segments according to how well they meet the Desired State described qualitatively and quantitatively in the draft Integrated Science Agenda (v4). From the Condition Index, 3 assessments are derived that rank opportunities for management and restoration of conditions included in the Condition Index – Watershed Land Use, Riparian Cover, and Stream Meander. Watershed Land Use management opportunities are based on the proportion of undisturbed land in the contributing (i.e. cumulative) watershed such that stream segments meeting the Desired State are considered Maintenance opportunities (values 5-6). The purpose of this data set is support resource allocation decisions (i.e. where to invest conservation effort) within the Gulf Coastal Plains and Ozarks Landscape Conservation Cooperative. The Protection Opportunity action map for the Upland Hardwood (Woodland) habitat system ranks pixels (250-m) based primarily on the Upland Hardwood (Woodland) Condition Index such that unprotected sites within healthy landscapes are ranked higher than those in very fragmented landscapes. Ranks are increased by information on existing partner interest (i.e. stated priority areas), elevated risk of change by 2060, and predicted occupancy of a majority of species identified in the GCPO LCC’s draft Integrated Science Agenda (v4)....

In large river ecosystems, the timing, extent, duration and frequency of floodplain inundation greatly affect the quality of fish and wildlife habitat and the supply of important ecosystem goods and services. Seasonal high flows provide connectivity from the river to the floodplain, and seasonal inundation of the floodplain governs ecosystem structure and function. River regulation and other forms of hydrologic alteration have altered the connectivity of many rivers with their adjacent floodplain – impacting the function of wetlands on the floodplain and in turn, impacting the mainstem river function. This data represents an assessment of forest composition used in the ecological assessment of upland hardwood systems by the GCPO LCC. We used a combination of remote sensing products including 2011 National Land Cover Database (NLCD) forest classes and the 2011 MAV forest classification layer produced by the Lower Mississippi Valley Joint Venture to delineate patches of all forest types in the GCPO LCC. We used NLCD as the primary data source when assessing forests outside the GCPO LCC MAV subgeography, and the LMVJV forest classification as the primary data source for forest assessment within the MAV. This project will address species-habitat relationships for a priority aquatic system for the GCPO LCC, Mainstem Big Rivers. Specifically, the project will collect subsurface aquatic habitat data using side-scan sonar and high resolution bathymetry data in the Pearl River system of Louisiana. This project expands on current work ongoing in the Pearl River, and would extend habitat data collection for the purposes of making recommendations on restoration of aquatic habitat for species endpoints in this aquatic system. This project directly addresses landscape conservation design and will be used to inform Adaptation Strategies.

Data layers pertaining to the management, restoration, or acquisition designations of state, federal, and non-government organizations (e.g., Focus Areas, Opportunity Areas, Priority Areas, Outstanding Natural Areas) along with the conservation estate (i.e. protected lands) within the Mississippi River Basin and intended to support development of the Multi-LCC Mississippi River Basin/Gulf Hypoxia Initiative’s Conservation Blueprint.
This project will use a Bayesian statistical framework to predict coastal erosion and inundation under a range of sea level rise scenarios. The Bayesian framework will also develop visualization products that will help natural resource managers anticipate sea level rise and adapt to the projected changes. Lastly, the frameworks will asses the potential impacts of sea level rise on coastal ecosystems and related wildlife resources.
This project integrates a reforestation decision support model for priority forest breeding birds and a restoration decision support tool for the federally-threatened Louisiana Black Bear. It was developed specifically to focus habitat restoration projects on frequently flooded agricultural lands within priority portions of the delta of Arkansas, Louisiana, and Mississippi, which were funded primarily by the Walton Family Foundation in 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013.
Long-term trend monitoring efforts for bats on National Wildlife Refuges have been prompted by a paucity of significant population information and precipitous declines in many bat species across the eastern United States. Acoustical detection of search-phase echolocations of bats provides an efficient means to identify bats to species without capture. We provide preliminary summary data for bat species richness and relative abundance using acoustical detection from road-based transects at 56 National Wildlife Refuges and 2 Ecological Field Offices across USFWS Regions 2, 3, and 4 from 2012-2015. Included in this final report are thirteen desired forest condition metrics, subdivided into sets of metrics for the condition of the canopy, midstory and ground layer (the full metrics are found in Appendix C, this document). These metrics can be applied to any of seven broad ecosystems we are calling “Southern Open Pine Groupings” (Appendix B). These are stand level metrics, and generally can be applied at sets of points or small plots across stands, in a manner similar to a timber cruise. Aug 2, 2016: This is combined presentation of two recently completed GCPO LCC-sponsored projects that address how to manage open pine savanna and woodlands to enhance wildlife habitat and biodiversity. The first project, “Developing and Applying Desired Forest Condition (DFC) Metrics for Open Pine Ecosystems” was recently completed by Rickie White, Project Manager/Ecologist with NatureServe. The second project, “Using Wildlife Habitat Models to Evaluate Open Pine Desired Management Endpoints” was recently completed by Mike Conner PhD, Wildlife Ecologist and Lora Smith PhD, Associate Scientist, both of the Joseph W. Jones Ecological Research Center.

Description of condition index value scores for estuarine tidal marsh along and within 10 km of the GCPO LCC Gulf Coast subgeography. A series of raster calculations were used in a dichotomous decision-based framework to compile a per-pixel draft condition index value at a 10 m resolution for GCPO estuarine tidal marsh based on the number of configuration and condition endpoints met within each marsh pixel. Mainstem big rivers were selected by the Gulf Coastal Plains and Ozarks (GCPO) Adaptation Science Management Team (ASMT) as a priority habitat system within the Mississippi Alluvial Valley subgeography. Mainstem big rivers are dominant feature on the GCPO landscape - eight of the largest ten rivers in the lower United States by discharge terminate in the GCPO. The goal of this dataset is to determine the amount, configuration and condition of key habitat features of the mainstem big rivers of the GCPO. This project will determine the effects of climate change, urbanization, succession, disturbance, and management on forest landscape change in the Gulf Coastal Plains and Ozarks (GCPO) region for the period 2000-2100.
