Invasive species are a concern worldwide as they can displace native species, reduce biodiversity, and disrupt ecological processes. European bird cherry (Prunus padus) (EBC) is an invasive ornamental tree that is rapidly spreading and possibly displacing native trees along streams in parts of urban Alaska. The objectives of this study were to: 1) map the current distribution of EBC along two Anchorage streams, Campbell and Chester creeks, and 2) determine the effects of EBC on selected ecological processes linked to stream salmon food webs. A pilot study was conducted to evaluate the use of PIT tags and underwater antennas to measure juvenile salmon growth rates and site fidelity. Juvenile coho (Oncorhynchus kisutch) and Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytsha) growth rates and site fidelity were compared between two streams within the Susitna River drainage in Southcentral Alaska. The two study streams were selected to represent a low-sloped wetland stream which is common on the west side of the drainage and a moderate sloped upland stream that drains the Talkeetna mountains which is common on the east side of the drainage. Marine-derived nutrients (MDN) delivered by spawning Pacific salmon ( Oncorhynchus spp.) contribute to the productivity of riverine ecosystems. Optimizing methods for measuring MDN assimilation in food webs will foster the development of ecologically based resource management approaches. Many fisheries for Pacific salmon Oncorhynchus spp. are actively managed to meet escapement goal objectives. In fisheries where the demand for surplus production is high, an extensive assessment program is needed to achieve the opposing objectives of allowing adequate escapement and fully exploiting the available surplus. We examined how marine-derived nutrients (MDN), in the form of spawning Pacific salmon, influenced the nutritional status and delta super(15)N of stream-dwelling fishes. We sampled juvenile coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch) and Dolly Varden (Salvelinus malma) during spring and fall from 11 south-central Alaskan streams that ranged widely in spawning salmon biomass (0.1-4.7 kg.m super(-2)). Growth rate (as indexed by RNA-DNA ratios), energy density, and delta super(15)N enrichment in spring-sampled fishes increased with spawner biomass, indicating the persistence of spawner effects more than 6 months after salmon spawning.
