Report is divided into three sections. In Section I, an overview of the Arctic-Yukon-Kuskokwim Management Area is provided, including a description of the area and subareas, Board of Fish activities, and management information and activities. In Section II, effort and harvest results are presented. In Section III, more detailed summaries of major fisheries and activities are provided

In 2005, the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) adopted Canada’s Policy for the Conservation of Wild Salmon Policy (the WSP) (DFO 2005). Implementation of the WSP consists of six strategies, the first of which requires the standardized monitoring of wild salmon status. Standardized monitoring begins with the identification of species-specific Conservation Units or CUs. The CUs serve two roles under the WSP. First, each CU is, in some sense, a significant element of biodiversity that the WSP seeks to conserve and manage. Second, each CU is a unit for reporting on the success (or failure) of actions taken under the WSP to conserve wild Pacific salmon. Subsequent steps in the Policy’s implementation, including...

Region(s) of distribution of Chum Salmon (Oncorhynchus keta) (Walbaum, 1792) in the Arctic as digitized for U.S. Geological Survey Scientific Investigations Report 2016-5038. For details on the project and purpose, see the report at https://doi.org/10.3133/sir20165038. Complete metadata for the collection of species datasets is in the metadata document "Dataset_for_Alaska_Marine_Fish_Ecology_Catalog.xml" at https://doi.org/10.5066/F7M61HD7. Source(s) for this digitized data layer are listed in the metadata Process Steps section. Note that the original source may show an extended area; some datasets were limited to the published map boundary. Distributions of marine fishes are shown in adjacent Arctic seas where...

Country of origin provides the basis for allocating harvests of Yukon River chum salmon. The genetic divergence among Yukon River chum salmon populations adjacent to the international border as revealed by allozyme and micro satellite variation is insufficient to determine the country of origin of returning fish using mixed-stock analysis (MSA). Consequently, we investigated the resolution provided by alternative genetic markers in an attempt to detect levels of divergence that would be sufficient for MSA. We analyzed 10 Yukon River chum salmon populations for variation at 30 variable amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) loci and for mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) restriction site variation. We assessed these...

Information specific to recreational fisheries in the Kuskokwim-Goodnews Management Area in 2011 and preliminary information for 2012 is presented. Estimates of fishing effort, total catch, and effort is summarized through the 2011 season. This information is provided to the Alaska Board of Fisheries (board), as well as to the general public and interested parties. Summaries of major fisheries within the area are detailed, including descriptions of the performance of these fisheries, regulatory actions by the board, social and biological issues, and descriptions of ongoing research and management activities. The remote waters of the Kuskokwim-Goodnews Management Area supported approximately 22,000 angler-days of...

At northern limits of a species? distribution, fish habitat requirements are often linked to thermal preferences, and the presence of overwintering habitat. However, logistical challenges and hydrologic processes typical of glacial systems could compromize the identification of these habitats, particularly in large river environments. Our goal was to identify and characterize spawning habitat for fall-run chum salmon Oncorhynchus keta and model habitat selection from spatial distributions of tagged individuals in the Tanana River, Alaska using an approach that combined ground surveys with remote sensing. Models included braiding, sinuosity, ice-free water surface area (indicating groundwater influence), and persistent...
Since 1996, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service biologists have annually used fish wheels to capture migrating adult fall chum salmon Oncorhynchus keta in the main-stem Yukon River, Alaska, and estimated their abundance via mark- recapture methods. In each year of the study, the mark rate of captured fish at a site near Rampart has been substantially greater than rates observed at numerous locations upriver of that site. The factors most likely to cause the observed reduction in the mark rate are violations of mark-recapture model assumptions or the mortality of marked fish between the Rampart site and upriver locations. Results of studies conducted through 2000 were most consistent with the hypothesis of mortality....

As part of the National Park Services Inventory and Monitoring Program a freshwater fish inventory was conducted in the Central Alaska Network between 2001 and 2003. This network is comprised of Denali National Park and Preserve, Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve, and Yukon-Charley Rivers National Preserve. The purpose of this inventory was to document 90% of the expected yet undocumented species and to collect baseline data of species abundance and distribution. Angling, dip nets, electrofishing, a fyke net, gill nets, hoop traps, minnow traps, and snorkeling were all methods used in the 135 different sites that were sampled in the Central Alaska Network. Nine out of twenty one expected yet undocumented...
