Monitoring 1-Changes in Plant and Animal Distribution: Fauna,
Species of Concern: Fish
As part of the National Park Services Inventory and Monitoring Program a freshwater fish inventory was conducted in the Central Alaska Network between 2001 and 2003. This network is comprised of Denali National Park and Preserve, Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve, and Yukon-Charley Rivers National Preserve. The purpose of this inventory was to document 90% of the expected yet undocumented species and to collect baseline data of species abundance and distribution. Angling, dip nets, electrofishing, a fyke net, gill nets, hoop traps, minnow traps, and snorkeling were all methods used in the 135 different sites that were sampled in the Central Alaska Network. Nine out of twenty one expected yet undocumented...

Gillnet catch data from the lower Yukon River, AK, collected from 1990 to 2003 in conjunction with a sonar study to estimate the abundance of migrating fish, were assembled. The full dataset contained 92,029 records with complete species and length information. A subset of data for the eight most prevalent groups of fish was selected for the estimation of net selectivity. The reduced dataset contained 89,984 records for Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha), summer and fall runs of chum salmon (O. keta), coho salmon (O. kisutch), pink salmon (O. gorbuscha), humpback whitefish (Coregonus pidschian), broad whitefish (C. nasus), and various cisco (Coregonus) species. A Pearson function was used as a net selectivity...

Data from high seas tagging experiments (external tags, coded-wire tags, electronic data storage tags) provide the only direct information on the distribution, biology, and ecology of immature and maturing Arctic-Yukon-Kuskokwim (AYK) salmon (Oncorhynchus spp.) migrating in the North Pacific Ocean and Bering Sea. Variation in the spatial and temporal distribution of tagging effort largely reflects changes in international salmon treaty research priorities over the past 52 years (1954-2006). Results of tagging studies indicate that in spring maturing AYK pink O. gorbuscha and coho O. kisutch salmon and immature and maturing AYK sockeye O. nerka and chum O. keta salmon are distributed primarily in the northeastern...

Data limitation is a common property of many fisheries. Some Pacific salmon populations are a typical example of this situation because the monitoring of numerous tributaries within an area becomes logistically intractable. Fishery management often responds to this scenario with qualitative stock assessments in the form of harvest projections. In some cases, fishery data, although limited, exists in a variety of sources and may be integrated to develop quantitative population estimates. The first objective of this investigation is to generate a modeling process that combines multiple data sources to estimate abundance and escapement estimates for data-limited salmon populations. Second, we consider the reliability...

The effect of tagging and capture on plasma concentrations of cortisol, glucose, lactate, chloride, and non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA) in chum salmon was investigated. Adult chum salmon were captured in August-September 2000 and 2001 with a fish wheel on the lower Kantishna River. Tagged and untagged fish were subsequently captured on the lower Toklat River and sampled for blood. Tagged fish (males and females) at the Toklat recovery fish wheels had lower (P < 0.04) plasma cortisol concentrations than untagged fish. Glucose concentrations were lower (P = 0.03) in tagged than untagged males but did not differ between tagged and untagged females. Lactate and chloride concentrations did not differ between tagged...

Standardized collection and reporting of subsistence salmon harvest information during the fishing season is an important management tool for Yukon River fishery managers. The 2003 salmon fishing season marked the second season of an organized effort to collect qualitative inseason subsistence harvest information. Information gauging progress towards subsistence salmon harvest goals, subsistence fishing characteristics, and quality of subsistence catch were collected. Progress towards meeting subsistence harvest goals was evaluated by using local village interviewers contacting a subsample of fishermen each week. Residents of Emmonak, Holy Cross, Nulato, Huslia, Galena, and Circle were interviewed weekly...
