![]() The surficial geologic map of the Eastern and Central United Statesdepicts the areal distribution of surficial geologic deposits and othermaterials that accumulated or formed during the past 2+ million years, the period that includes all activities of the human species. Thesematerials are at the surface of the earth. They make up the "ground"on which we walk, the "dirt" in which we dig foundations, and the soilin which we grow crops. Most of our human activity is related in oneway or another to these surface materials that are referred tocollectively by many geologists as regolith, the mantle of fragmentaland generally unconsolidated material that overlies the bedrockfoundation of the continent. The map is based...

Modeling the Response of Freshwater Mussels to Changes in Water Temperature, Habitat, and Streamflow
North American freshwater mussels are in serious decline as a result of pollution and habitat destruction from human activities. In addition, many mussel species are living in habitats that push the upper limits of their heat tolerance, which may become problematic as the climate and, as a result, water temperatures warm. As part of this project, we created a set of models to predict how freshwater mussels would respond to climate change effects. Our primary objective was to help federal and state natural resource managers forecast how mussel species will respond to climate change over the next 30 to 50 years, so that managers can develop appropriate adaptation strategies to address these changes. Additionally,...

The GAP National Terrestrial Ecosystems - Ver 3.0 is a 2011 update of the National Gap Analysis Project Land Cover Data - Version 2.2 for the conterminous U.S. The GAP National Terrestrial Ecosystems - Version 3.0 represents a highly thematically detailed land cover map of the U.S. The map legend includes types described by NatureServe's Ecological Systems Classification (Comer et al. 2002) as well as land use classes described in the National Land Cover Dataset 2011 (Homer et al. 2015). These data cover the entire continental U.S. and are a continuous data layer. These raster data have a 30 m x 30 m cell resolution. GAP used the best information available to create the land cover data; however GAP seeks to improve...

This dataset combines the work of several different projects to create a seamless data set for the contiguous United States. Data from four regional Gap Analysis Projects and the LANDFIRE project were combined to make this dataset. In the northwestern United States (Idaho, Oregon, Montana, Washington and Wyoming) data in this map came from the Northwest Gap Analysis Project. In the southwestern United States (Colorado, Arizona, Nevada, New Mexico, and Utah) data used in this map came from the Southwest Gap Analysis Project. The data for Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina, Mississippi, Tennessee, and Virginia came from the Southeast Gap Analysis Project and the California data was...

Each text file describes coupled climate and land use scenarios used to model species distributions under different greenhouse gas emissions trajectories and time periods. Three different greenhouse gas emissions trajectories (representative concentration pathways [RCPs]), were used as the basis for future scenarios, including the 2.6 (low emissions), 4.5 (medium-low emissions) and 8.5 (high emissions) W/m2 RCPs (IPCC 2013). Three GCMs were selected based on two criteria: 1) high performance in hindcasting climate variables for the study area (Sheffield et al. 2013), and 2) to encompass the full range of variability across future climate projections from all available GCMs (Knutti et al. 2013, Maloney et al. 2014)....
