These data were released prior to the October 1, 2016 effective date for the USGS’s policy dictating the review, approval, and release of scientific data as referenced in USGS Survey Manual Chapter 502.8 Fundamental Science Practices: Review and Approval of Scientific Data for Release. Four polygon vector data sets and one related table describe land-cover in Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area (RRC_NCA_p) and Coyote Springs (CS_ACEC_p), Piute-Eldorado Valley (PEV_ACEC_p), and Mormon Mesa (MM_ACEC_p) Areas of Critical Environmental Concern, Clark County, Nevada. One polygon vector data set per Area is attributed with land- cover at the vegetation stand level (abbreviated with a stand code) and the corresponding...

The percent tree canopy layer quantifies per pixel tree canopy fraction as a continuous variable from 1 to 100 percent. The file is an 8 Bit continuous data file that will contain values from 0 to 255 when displayed in a software package. The value of '127' is a 'No Data' value applied to areas outside of the modeled percent tree canopy extent. This dataset was derived from the following source: - The Multi-Resolution Land Cover Consortium (MRLC) National Land Cover Dataset (NLCD), last updated in 2001. CO2 transport processes relevant for estimating net ecosystem exchange (NEE) at the Niwot Ridge AmeriFlux site in the front range of the Rocky Mountains, Colorado, USA, were investigated during a pilot experiment. We found that cold, moist, and CO2-rich air was transported downslope at night and upslope in the early morning at this forest site situated on a ∼ 5% east-facing slope. We found that CO2 advection dominated the total CO2 transport in the NEE estimate at night although there are large uncertainties because of partial cancellation of horizontal and vertical advection. The horizontal CO2 advection captured not only the CO2 loss at night, but also the CO2 uptake during daytime. We found that horizontal CO2...
Juniperus woodlands are widely distributed in western North America. Few studies of seedling emergence, long-term survival, growth or mortality of the dominant Juniperus spp. in these woodlands have been carried out. Consequently, regeneration dynamics in these woodlands are poorly understood. Juniperus ashei is the dominant woody plant in the majority of woodland and savanna communities of the Edwards Plateau region in central Texas. We examined the emergence, mortality and growth of various spatial and temporal cohorts of J. ashei seedlings over an eight or nine-year period. Greatest emergence was found during the cool, mostly winter months and under the canopy of mature J. ashei trees. Emergence was significantly...

Photo-interpretation of high-resolution aerial imagery was used to delineate individual stems of select woody species and to map vegetation communities at Palmyra Atoll, USA. Imagery collected using Unoccupied Aerial Systems in October, 2016, as well as derived elevation and mosaicked orthoimagery, were used to delineate individual crowns of coconut, Pisonia and other selected woody species that comprise the bulk of the canopy on the island. National Vegetation Classification System vegetation associations and other vegetation communities were also mapped. Finally, the high tide line was delineated to provide an updated map and estimate of area for terrestrial resources.
