Description of Work The study will be implemented in two phases due to logistical constraints and the need to incorporate methods developed (and findings) from a comparable investigation underway in another AOC. Generation of secondary biogenic methane in coal beds is likely controlled by a combination of factors such as the bioavailability of coal carbon, the presence of a microbial community to convert coal carbon to methane, and an environment supporting microbial growth and methanogenesis. A set of treatments and controls was developed to bioassay the bioavailability of coal for conversion to methane under defined laboratory conditions. The data were gathered as part of a long-term, seasonal assessment of estrogenicity in selected locations within Pennsylvania from 2012-2017. Data were collected over this time frame to determine seasonal and annual changes in surface water estrogenicity.Estrogen is reported as estrogen equivalents (EEQ) as determined by a bioluminescent yeast estrogen screen. A total of 193 grab water samples were collected during this time of which 41% had EEQ above the limit of detection. The maximum estrogen equivalents (EEQ) measured was 5.44 ng EEQ/ L, while the median concentration was 0.44 ng/L. Description of Work This study will generate bed sediment toxicity and benthic community data needed to test two related hypotheses that address the two criteria for delisting the benthos BUI. The first hypothesis is that bed sediments at selected sample locations in the AOC (in three tributaries and in the St. Lawrence River) are no more toxic to the test species than bed sediments collected from control sites located outside (generally upstream from) the AOC. Intersex in small- and largemouth bass has been observed in the upper Chesapeake Bay Watershed since 2003. This observation is indicative of exposure to estrogenic endocrine disrupting chemicals. Data were collected associated with the application of a pesticide to a stormwater retention pond and burrows to suppress or eradicate an invasive crayfish species, Procambarus clarkii, in support of high-priority research developing control methods to mitigate impacts of invasive crayfish within the Great Lakes Basin. Zebra mussels (Dreissena polymorpha Pallas 1771) are a tenacious aquatic invasive species in the United States and new infestations can rapidly expand into dense colonies. Zebra mussels were first reported in Marion Lake (Dakota County, Minnesota) in September 2017 and surveys indicated the infestation was likely isolated near the public boat access. A 2.4-hectare area, containing the known zebra mussel infestation, was enclosed and treated for nine days with EarthTec QZ®, a copper-based molluscicide, in an attempt to eradicate the zebra mussels.
