The mottled duck, a focal species for the Gulf Coast Prairie Landscape Conservation Cooperative, is one of only a few duck species adapted to breeding in southern marshes. A major part of its population spends its entire life cycle within a relatively small coastal area in eastern Texas and western Louisiana. This is a thriving part of the Mississippi and Central Flyways, two of four major waterfowl migration routes in North America. In recent years, the mottled duck’s habitat and surrounding areas have been compromised by urbanization, agricultural development, and changes to the area’s hydrology affecting coastal wetlands. The latter threat includes the ramifications of climate change, such as sea level rise and...

This is a comma delimited text file of the bird observations for the Arctic Coastal Plain survey. These observations have undergone an extensive quality control process that is ongoing and corrected several errors in the source data. Point observation of birds are given in coordinate reference system EPSG:4326 and are accurate only to +/- 500m. The field "Year" gives the calendar year that the survey was flown, "Stratum" gives the transect density strata name, "NavTransect" gives the transect identifier used for navigation by the pilot (this is not necessarily the same as the design transect), and "Obs_Type" is the social group (single, pair, etc.) of the bird observation, "Num" is the number of observation of...
The primary objective is to provide guidance to conservation agencies and programs such as Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, Louisiana Department of Fisheries and Wildlife, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Region 2 and 4 National Wildlife Refuges, and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Migratory Bird Office Region 2 to focus banding activities (i.e., where and when) and minimum sample sizes necessary to meet harvest management objectives for mottled ducks. A secondary objective is to investigate alternate marking techniques (e.g., PIT tags, NANO tags) to supplement or replace assessments derived from band recoveries. The banding needs assessment will be a two part analysis. The first part will use multi-state simulation...
In Texas, the USFWS is currently reviewing 11 mussel species for ESA protection and several of these species (e.g., Cyclonaias petrina, Texas Pimpleback, and Lampsilis bracteata, Texas Fatmucket) have been the primary focus of controlled propagation by several federal hatcheries. To date, information on genetic diversity within and across known populations for these species is incomplete and so the justification for their controlled propagation is unclear, and a genetic management plan to guide propagation activities does not exist. These unknowns raise serious questions about whether any of the 11 proposed species are truly in need of and would benefit from controlled propagation. The overall goal of this project...
Pectis imberbis A. Gray is an endemic plant species native to southern Arizona with fewer than 400 known individuals in existence. A total of 6 putative populations, each consisting of between ca. 10 and 180 individuals, occur at elevations of 1100-1700 m in a variety of habitats, including oak woodlands, desert grasslands, oak savannas, and disturbed areas in Arizona (road cuts, arroyos) (USFWS 2012). In the past, populations were also identified in Mexico (Keil 1978, USFWS 2012); however, Mexican populations have not been relocated in recent years (Keil 1982, Falk and Warren 1994, Sanchez-Escalante 2018a, 2018b). Resurveys of known P. imberbis sites suggest significant decline in abundance over the last two decades...

Sea level rise caused by climate change is an ongoing phenomenon and a concern both locally and worldwide. Low-lying coastal areas are particularly at risk to flooding and inundation, affecting a large proportion of the human population concentrated in these areas as well as natural communities-particularly animal species that depend on these habitats as a key component of their life cycle. While more local, state, and federal governments have become concerned with the potential effects that predicted sea levels will have on their communities and coastal landscapes, more information is needed on the potential effects that changes in sea level will have on coastal habitats and species.

Broad scale banding of midcontinent greater white-fronted geese (MCWFG) is motivated by the Flyway Management Plan objective to maintain optimum harvest opportunity throughout the population range (Central, Mississippi, and Pacific Flyway Councils, 2023). This objective is accomplished by implementing a harvest strategy whereby changes to bag limits and season dates are dependent upon thresholds of abundance and harvest rate. Such estimates are calculated through Lincoln estimation (Lincoln 1930, Alisauskas et al. 2009, Dooley 2023) that requires annual banding. In addition, banding provides a means to identify changes in harvest distribution. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) Migratory Bird Management...

This project aims to estimate spatial and temporal trends of waterfowl and waterbirds on the Arctic Coastal Plain (ACP) of Alaska from 2007 to present. The main approach is motivated by Amundson et al. (2019) using space-time generalized additive models (GAMs, Wood, 2017) but with some improvements to handle observer effects and to associate sampling effort to specific spatial locations along a sampled transect similar to Miller et al. (2013). As part of this effort, a major data quality control process was begun in March 2022 that led to the correction of many data errors and re-formatting of the raw 2007 to 2023 data (available at here) to make it more accessible and usable to outside partners. Because of the...
The goals of this study are to: (1) generate a genetic toolset (80-90 microsatellite loci per species) for long term genetic monitoring of both wild and captive populations of each threatened gartersnake species (THEQ & THRU) that inhabit Arizona and New Mexico; (2) conduct field surveys at Saliz Creek to assess the genetic, demographic, and life history effects of a 2012 wild translocation event for THRU to better assess the strategies of genetic management and success of translocations; (3) conduct targeted surveys for both species at key sites to collect additional samples from geographic gaps and increase sample sizes at previously sampled sites to further evaluate connectivity and genetic diversity of these...
Conserving migratory or wide-ranging species presents considerable challenges, as these individuals move across disparate jurisdictions often crossing international borders among crucial stages of their annual cycle. Within North America, Migratory Bird Joint Ventures (JVs) have established successful partnerships to coordinate the planning and delivery of conservation actions within key regions to benefit migratory bird populations. However, the extent to which local conservation actions influence regional demographics and in turn affect continental population dynamics remains poorly understood. Maximizing efficient use of limited resources to conserve habitats for wide-ranging species has motivated a critical...
The whooping crane is one of the most iconic and endangered migratory birds in the world and the wild population’s wintering grounds and migration corridor overlaps a significant portion of the USFWS southwest region. Rapidly developing wind energy in the Gulf Coast (wintering habitat), East Texas, Oklahoma and Great Plains (migratory habitat) has the potential to impact whooping crane habitat use and shift seasonal mortality. Balancing wind energy with species conservation is also a Regional Conservation Priority. This work will provide information about the potential impacts and mitigations of risks of whooping cranes with energy exploration, development and production activities across their wintering area and...

This is an SQLite GeoPackage simple feature vector database of spectacled eider relative densities predicted from a generalized additive model across the Arctic Coastal Plain. These densities are "relative" because year- or observer-specific detection is not incorporated. However, the estimation model include observer as a random effect and predictions are made after removing the effect of observer (i.e., at the average observer). Each year is a separate layer named by year. Predictions are gridded into cells 750m per side but are trimmed to the ACP survey area, so some cells are smaller. For each year, the variable 'fit' gives the expected density, 'se.fit' gives the standard error of the fit, 'Sample.Label' is...

This is an SQLite GeoPackage simple feature multilinestring vector database of the Arctic Coastal Plain survey transects in coordinate reference system EPSG:4326. There is one layer for each year 2007 to 2023, although in general the there is a four panel rotation that varies each year. All years are provided because implementation of the panel design varied through time. The field"Year" given the calendar year that the transects were implemented, "Stratum" gives the strata name, "Transect" gives the transect identifier, and the "geom" field gives the simple feature Well Known Text geometry data. Note that these transect are the idealized design and are not an exact record of the true flight path or survey effort....

Habitat loss and degradation due to urban expansion and other human activities have raised concerns for the Western Gulf Coast Mottled Duck population. This species relies on tidal, palustrine, and agricultural wetlands as well as grasslands for all of its life cycle needs. The disappearance of suitable nesting and brood-rearing habitat is believed to be the primary factor associated with long-term population decline of the mottled duck. One of the first science projects initiated by the GCP LCC was development of a spatially-explicit Decision Support Tool (DST) to help guide conservation and management of habitat for breeding Mottled Ducks in coastal Louisiana and Texas. An important next step is evaluating the...

Recent observations by U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (Service) personnel have noted a number of changes along the Pecos River in east central New Mexico that may signal a fundamental decline in habitat quality for the federally listed Pecos bluntnose shiner (shiner). To evaluate trends in fluvial geomorphology, and thus shiner habitat conditions, an in-depth and comprehensive study, including system hydrology, is needed. The Service seeks to describe trends of geomorphic change of the Pecos River and determine plausible alternatives for river operations. Study goals include the evaluation of previously collected field data, analysis of geomorphic changes, review of effects of hydrologic and geomorphic change on...

Oyster reefs are one of the most important environmental and economic resources within the coastal regions of the United States. Although oyster reefs in deeper water have been mapped, the extent and condition of intertidal reefs has not been sufficiently inventoried in most states. Understanding the geographic extent and condition of intertidal oyster reef and shell bottoms is important for assessing parental stock and to determine potential recruitment bottlenecks for oysters within an estuary. These intertidal areas have traditionally served as a sanctuary from commercial harvest pressure due to closures, safety, and operational barriers preventing the harvesting of oysters in shallow water. The location...
Significant progress has been made toward the recovery of the threatened Apache Trout. Major threats were removed including hybridization, logging, and overharvest. Remaining threats are being managed and are manageable. Partners agree that it is time to evaluate if the Apache Trout still warrants protection under the Endangered Species Act (ESA). The Apache Trout is a “conservation-reliant species,” meaning that it will need continued active population- and threat-management related to predation and competition from nonnative trout species. Therefore, a long-term CMP is essential to analyzing the species’ status relative to potential delisting. An Apache Trout SSA and CMP are both prerequisite documents needed...
