Album caption: Travel on the Belize River near Never Delay, British Honduras. This type of flat bottom boat is used to transport people and supplies between Belize and El Cayo which is the head of navigation. It will accomodate 20 people. The motor burns kerosene oil. During the dry season these boats cannot be heavily loaded so the cargo is carried in pitpans and towed as shown in the lower photograph. It took the Carnegie Institution party 50 hours to travel the 180 river miles during which time it rained almost continuously before reaching El Cayo. British Honduras. 1923. Album caption: Motor launches and pitpans anchored at El Cayo during the dry season. El Cayo is at the head of navigation for boats of this type. During the rainy season the river bank will extend to the edge of the trees on the right. Chicle is the principal cargo carried down stream by these boats. No index card.

Kilmartin) had completed mapping the Lake Peten area as intended and my party is leaving Flores for Belize. The photograph was taken from Playa Trapiche.
