This is a geochemical data set from the reanalysis of 44 rock samples collected between 1966 and 1970, and 107 sediment samples collected in 1966 and 1967. These samples were collected by the U.S. Geological Survey for a study investigating the mineral resources of the Idaho Primitive Area (Cater et al., 1973). The samples are from the Lower Middle Fork of the Salmon River, including the tributaries of Big Creek, Camas Creek, Brush Creek, Wilson Creek, Waterfall Creek, Ship Island Creek, Reese Creek, Stoddard Creek, and Papoose Creek. The overall objective of this study is to characterize the regional impact of legacy mining for the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness Area. Mary P. Rossillon (1981) explored...

This Data Release provides tabular and geospatial data digitized by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) from a U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBoM) report titled Mineral Investigation of Sangre de Cristo Wilderness Study Area, Alamosa, Custer, Fremont, Huerfano, and Saguache Counties, Colorado. The original preliminary paper report, numbered Mineral Land Assessment 65-83 (MLA 65-83; Ellis and others, 1983), presented the results of a mineral resource potential survey of areas in and around the Sangre de Cristo Range flanking the northeastern extent of San Luis Valley in south-central Colorado. Included in this Data Release are georeferenced scans of the regional plate maps, digitized sample site locations, analytical...

This data release is a geochemical data set from the reanalysis of 23 rock and 85 sediment samples collected between 1966 and 1970 by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) for a series of studies investigating the mineral resources of the Idaho Primitive Area (Cater et al., 1973). The samples are from the upper Middle Fork Salmon River and the South Fork Salmon River, including the tributaries of East Fork of the South Fork and Porphyry Creek. The overall objective of this study is to characterize the regional impact of legacy mining for the Frank Church - River of No Return Wilderness Area. In 1980 the U. S. Congress passed the Central Idaho Wilderness Act which combined the Idaho Primitive Area, the Salmon Rivers...

This data release contains geochemical data from selected U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) projects from the 1960s-1980s that were previously unpublished as digital data. The objective of those projects was to describe the geology, determine petrologic and geochemical characteristics, or to evaluate the mineral resource potential of Federal Lands and adjacent study areas. These data comprise geochemical analyses from 36,498 samples--27,223 rock samples, 4,091 sediment samples, 2,351 soil samples, 330 heavy-mineral pan concentrate samples, 297 organic material samples, 58 mineral samples, 27 water samples, 11 miscellaneous samples, and 2,110 unspecified media samples. More than 78 percent of these samples were analyzed...

To document regional water quality in areas of potential base-metal mining, bedrock, soil, streambed sediment, and surface-water samples were collected and analyzed in three watersheds that cross the basal part of the Duluth Complex (northeastern Minnesota). The three watershed each had different mineral-deposit settings: (1) copper-nickel-platinum group element mineralization (Filson Creek), (2) iron-titanium-oxide mineralization (St. Louis River), and (3) no identified mineralization (Keeley Creek). At least 10 bedrock, 30 soil (two from 15 sites), and up to 13 streambed sediment samples were collected in each watershed and analyzed for 44 major and trace elements by a combined method using a combined inductively...

The USGS examined mercury (Hg) concentrations in fish populations inhabiting impacted and reference streams as part of an investigation into the transport of trace metals in a watershed impacted by legacy mercury mining downstream from the Cinnabar mine site, Valley County, ID. Fish were sampled through an electrofishing survey utilizing a two-pass quantitative depletion approach where possible. Five reaches were selected in the Sugar Creek/Cinnabar Creek watershed, including two background reaches (ID020; ID021) with negligible mining impacts, Cinnabar Creek above the confluence with Sugar Creek (ID019), and two sites on Sugar Creek below the confluence with Cinnabar Creek (ID018 and ID010). Juvenile Bull trout...

There is a growing demand for commodities (elements, compounds, minerals) used in today's advanced technologies. Critical minerals are usually found in ore deposits that are deemed vital to economic and national security. The National Geochemical Database on Ore Deposits: Legacy data (NGDOD) contains chemistry and geologic information for nearly 30,000 historic ore and ore-related rock samples from mineral deposits and mining districts in the United States. Geochemical data sets from various mineral deposits were submitted by geologists of the "Systems Approach to Critical Minerals Inventory, Research, and Assessment" (SACM) within the U.S. Geological Survey Mineral Resource Program (MRP). The data sets represent...
